Timing in general

So I've been tuning my car now for 1.5 years, have it running pretty damn good. I'll start by saying yes I've searched but still have some general questions, used to chat with Grumpy when he was alive (damn I wish he was still around now that I know more about what I'm asking). I still have a general basic question though:

So my tune is giving my motor Id guess what it wants because of the performance however, in general. A v8 SBC wants a fair amount of timing from idle to about 3000, then a spark map would be at max spark after 4800rpm. The anamoly being at cruise (1400-2000rpms / <30kpa) around 40degrees total.

The trouble I'm having is 1. am I right in my general thought and 2. I can't get rid of a bit of ping around 2000-2500 33-50kpa map pressure

I'm runnin no blower at the moment, a HSR intake, 58mm TB, 60# injectors, hooker 2210's, Dart Pro1 Alum heads (64cc / 200cc) 1.5 Harland sharp RR's and a Comp Cam: Lift: .520int/.540exh | Duration: 288int / 315exh | 113LSA

Re: Timing in general

new symptoms have developed since that last post and I'm leaning more towards the distributor taking a dirt nap or being off a tooth or two on the cam.

The car has now 3x times over the last 500 miles just died in the middle of crusing. I come to a stop, key on and ALL looks good every one of the 10 guages I have in the car. I go to start it and BANG!! The backfire is so bad you'd think someone just lauched a TOW missle or set of a M100. Then car just cranks and cranks and cranks, no fire.

I'm ordering a new MSD or Mallory distributor and digital ignition box this week as well.
