Wideband 02 selection/installation help please

I am very new to computer tuning and posting on here as well. My toy is a 1988 iroc that has a 383 stroker engine with a tpis miniram, zz10 camshaft, 30lb injectors and rhs 200cc aluminum heads. I havent done a thing to this engine except set the timing 3yrs ago when I first fired up the motor. It actually runs pretty good for what little I drive the car but I know that it is not perfect yet as far as computer tuning. When I went to the track 3yrs ago after the motor was installed I ran a 12.36 @ 109.71. Well, 3yrs later I finally got the itch to attempt to computer tune this car myself. My goal is to see if I can break into the 11's with some "tweaking".

I know that the first thing I need to do is some data logging. I have ordered the Aldu1 and cable1, ostrich 2.0, burn2, g1 adapter, c2 chips and tunerproRT from Moates today. My question is what do I need to do in order to get wideband o2 data to show on my data logs? Which wideband o2 should I purchase? I am using the gm#16198259 computer.

I'm not sure there is a hack to get WBO2 data directly into the datastream of your ECM.

If you had bought the AutoProm, it has extra channels that can be used to add extra inputs to a datastream, but it can be a bit tricky to set-up, but completely possible.

Many people will re-purpose the EGR position input, which is a 0-5V signal (Not sure if your car actually has this), for a quick and dirty WBO2 input and then modify the ADX to change the EGR pintle position information to show AFR.

As far as one to actually purchase? I like 14point7.com products. I have both the SLC-DIY (V1, no longer available) and the SLC_PP2. I've had the DIY installed in my car for a couple years now, without issue. Before that I was using it to tune other people's cars. I may swap the PP2 in it's place in my car, since it has some additional datalogging capabilities built in.

Previously to using the 14point7.com products I had a couple Innovate Motorsports LC1s. They worked well, but do not have USB connectivity, and I've had issues with serial to USB converters, both cheap and expensive. They also don't have built in displays, and for the money there are many other products that offer more features in today's market.

I've installed the AEM WBO2, that is built into a gauge (I don't recall the model number) and it seemed to work well, but there was some reason I wouldn't want to run one myself, but I don't recall what that was now. It lacked something, just don't remember what exactly. But I am pretty picky.

Thank you for your response and telling me about 14point7.com! I am browsing on there now and I see a Spartan Lambda Sensor that says it can produce a simulated narrowband output. Do you know if this means I can actually replace my stock o2 sensor and my computer can operate closed loop functions properly?

In theory, yes.

In practice people say that the ECM does not like simulated NBO2 outputs (from any brand), so it is usually recommended to either only install the WBO2 where the original was and use open loop to tune, or add a second bung for the WBO2 sensor. Personally I like to add a second bung.

I will run a seperate bung for the wideband then. In your opinion do you think that Spartan Sensor will be sufficient for my data logging purposes then? It is almost $100 cheaper then the Lm-1 listed on Moates

Re: Wideband 02 selection/installation help please

I would go Spartan Lambda Controller over the Spartan sensor. reason being, the Spartan Sensor and cable are one piece, you can not simply unplug the sensor from the cable to make install and removal, or replacement easy. I think this is why Alan developed the Spartan Cable to address such issues.

I have not personally used either of these products, but they will have the proper 0-5V output that is needed.

I would however recomend instead to either go with the SLC Gauge, or the SLC DIY2 or SLC_PP2, due to the built in displays. This does a couple things, it gives you a dash mounted display that is easy to read, and updates very quickly, along with giving you a way of verifying that the conversion you are using in your ADX is accurate.

Re: Wideband 02 selection/installation help please

Just so you know, most wideband units you buy all use the same sensor, or one of the minor variants (just different cable lengths). The difference is in the electronics.
I too like the 14point7 products.
I have a slc diy (v1) unit and intend to install a couple slc oem kits in some friends cars soon.

It also looks like 14point7 is moving towards the LSU 4.9 sensor (its in their open source controller). This may prove to be a better sensor option in the the years to come, mainly because of the simple calibration.

as for getting the wideband reading into your datastream six shooter is correct, its very common to re-use the egr input. Many computers even have some other unused 0-5v ADC inputs that can be used.

I like to have a separate wideband and narrowband sensor installed. Although narrowband sensors tend to change a lot with temperature, its still nice to be able to compare the two incase one starts reading funny.
