PROM Failure
Question about error 51.
Background: The service engine light started flickering and about 5 seconds later the engine died. It wouldn't run in gear without pressing the gas pedal. I limped it home and hooked up my Auto X-Ray. Scan says prom failure and no closed loop. 2 days later I start the car, with the scanner hooked up and it goes into closed loop @140'. But the inegrator is pushing 140+, and the block learn is 144. The prom ID is 551 if that makes a difference.
My question is; If I relace the prom is this likely to happen again? I believe this is an ARAP chip, and that is what I ordered to replace it with; but, I don't want to install it if I'm going to fry the new one. If you have any ideas, please give me some suggestions/advice.
TIA,
Russ

Who did you buy the ARAP "chip" from? They need to be "altered" if you run them on an F-body. They are not exactly "plug 'n play".
Also, check how the Memcal is seated on the ECM, and the connections of the harness to the ECM.

Does the ARAP bin still have to be modified for an 89 car? I thought it was made for the 89's.
Is it just the ac pressure thing that needs to be switched or is there more that has to be modified. I burned a pure ARAP bin last night but the car died right after it started so I switched back. I thought it was because I didnt program anything in the bottom half of the eprom, but maybe its because I didnt modify the bin at all. I looked through the archives, and the only things I saw to modify was the reversed fan thing , disabling vats if you dont have it, and maybe tone down the spark advance some.
