swapping speedo units in a 85TA
I have a 85 Trans Am with the 85mph speedo unit. I want to install a 140mph speedo unit in it's place. How hard will this be to do? The original unit has a cable driven speedometer and the rest looks like a circuit board on the back. The tach yellows at 5500 & redlines at 6000. If it doesn't just swap in what kind of rewiring would I be looking at?

Once you find a speedo, the swap is simple. You may reset the odometer in the 145 speedo to read the correct mileage, or swap the odometers in the speedos.

If I'm not mistaken, there are no cable driven 140mph speedos for the Firebird, only the Camaro. The electronic 140's came out in the 86 Trans Ams.

I swapped my cluster over to a 140. The 85mph cable driven cluster is completly different than the 140mph electric cluster. To do the swap you will need to rewire the two connectors and add a buffer box. I cut the traces on the curcuit board and spliced them to the correct loaction.
As for resetting the odometer you take the face off the spdo, release the pin for the numbers, turn the numbers to what you want and put the pin back in.
