Door switch

hey guys when i got my car i was missing a passenger door switch to turn on the lights. Well today I got me a switch and I attempted to install it tonight. I connected the white wire to the door switch and whenever i opened the door it blew the acc. fuse. The fuse thats in it is a 20. I attempted to put a 25...it blew...i put in a 30....it blew. I didnt want to go over that so i disconnected the white wire and put elec. tape on it so it wouldnt short out. any help will be appreciated. Also theres a dark green wire about the same length that isnt a 12v constant. I have no idea what it is and its not a ground either. thanks for the help in advance.

Does the door jam switch on the driver side work to turn on the courtesy light and dome light?

Aha, you might have the wrong switch. I believe our courtesy lights are 12V switched (Trickster, would you have a diagram handy? I'm at work and the manual is at home) and if your switch is the grounding kind, you might be simply grounding the dome light circuit (probably hot side) and blowing the fuse.

But I might be wrong.

It would be hard for me to tell you exactly which one you have Will, they had two different styles of switches that they used. You can pull the kick panel off and take a look at the wiring that goes there.

Can we safely assume that ALL 3rdgens have ground switched dome lights? I know some vehicles are different, for example F@rd uses 12V switched dome light circuit.

In that case, it would be good to check the voltage on the white wire on driver's side. It should have 12V when the light is OFF. Grounding this wire should turn the lights on. If it blows the fuse instead, there is a problem with the wiring itself. The white wire should NOT have constant 12V.

I got the switch from the Chevrolet parts place here in MS. The switch is a single terminal switch and the white wire is a +12v even when its not connected to the swtich. the part number is 20589218 if that helps. This needs to be fixed b/c i am going to put an alarm on my car and it cannot b done if the switch doesnt work. i can post a pic of what the swtich looks like if it would help any.

thanks,

Kyle

Hi I am new here, but have I been reading through 100s of these posts. Lots of great info, great site!

I am having a similar problem, where my CTSY pops everytime I put a new one in. The dome and floorboard lights come on for a few seconds then it pops. I have read all the posts about it possibly being the cig lighter, I took that out, no luck. Checked wires attached to fuse box, etc.. I was looking at the door jamb switch which is double terminal. Is it possible the 2 white wires could touch and short the switch out? My fuse pops with the door open or closed. Additionally, my hood is locked shut and I cannot get it up from the inside. Possibly because of the release solenoid? Might be related I suspect.

Anyhow thanks for any suggestions!!

Re: Door switch

Not sure if anyone is ever going to see my question in this old topic, but I have a door jamb switch question regarding once of the double terminals:

What is the tan wire for? What is even the point of the second terminal?

I have been searching the web for an hour or two but I cannot find the answer. Closest I got was a wiring diagram of a 4th gen. Camaro that said the tan wire leads to some "ignition warning" something.

Re: Door switch

It turns on the warning buzzer that your key is still in the ignition.
