VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor seal replacement questions

Hey Guys, My VSS is leaking. 1990 MD8 Auto - The kit I bought comes with a speedometer shaft seal. Will it be obvious how to replace the speedo shaft seal when I take the VSS out? To prevent a big mess, does any transmission fluid need to be drained before removing the VSS for seal replacement?

Yes.

There are 2; a big O-ring about 1" dia that goes around the outside, and a small lip seal that goes around the shaft on the inside, maybe 3/8" ID. I doubt you'll have trouble figuring it out.

Thank you for the confidence, I seem to make easy things hard! What happens when I pull this off, is trans fluid going to leak out all over the place, or will it just be a little bit?

That or none at all. That's been my experience when replacing the entire speedometer driven gear sleeve (to put it into GM parlance). The VSS housing is not the same (obviously) but similar.

The outer o-ring is visible on the VSS above and the inner lip seal is visible on the gear driven version. Both seals are common to both.

Right: generally no more than an ounce or 2. The VSS itself is above the fluid level, so all that will leeeeeeek out is, what's kind of lurking all around it in its little hole and cavity.
