Timing 305tbi after new dist
I have 305 tbi engine, if you haven't already read my post from the distributor i bought, i bought a distributor on ebay and i am supposed to be able to take off the est wire from the dist. to time the engine when i do it will not start, I wasn't real sure on which wire was the est that plugs in so i started with the smaller plug and triedto start it and it just cranked, then plugged it back in and took off the other plug the larger one and plugged it back in still it didn't start, the distributor i bought isn't an msd type but its much like the msd 8366 version, which the installation instructs to take off the single wire est plug from the dist., i have one plug with two wires which is the smaller plug and one with three wires which is the larger plug... Can anyone help with this? Which plug is the est?

The EST-bypass wire is located on the passenger side wiring harness, next to the AC box. It's pretty much right in between the motor and the passenger side fenderwell. It should be a black-tan wire.
You can see it in this picture. It's right behind the strut tower cap:

timing after new dist
ok i've got it running but with the computer hooked up i can only give 1/4 throttle if that, before it boggs down, i decreased the gap in the plugs but to no avail, it has new wires, accel super coil, high performance module in the new distributor.... i think i should go with a platinum spark plug or something like it, right now i have some regular plugs in there ac delco gapped at 30 they were at 35, timing with compter off is right on tdc. It stumbles for about 3 to 4 seconds right after start up with the computer on then advances and runs but when i give it gas it boggs down... any body got suggestions?????/

I do .. no fuel pressure, mine did this and it was the rubber hose split in my fuel tank that connects the fuel pump to the main fuel line, from it I got a lean exhaust code and my exhaust littlerally turned orange while revved to like 2000rpm in nuetral for like 3-5 minutes.
replaced the hose and went from 4psi back to 13psi

smoke on startup on a 305 is pretty much normal. But the timimg issue, i cant even find the stupid connector on my car! so all i did was turn the dist. untill i got it to run reall nice, also there is another trick. take a bottle of water, sit it on the carb, tbi unit and trn the dist untill u get the least amout of vibrations.

i might have just found my problem i was getting an occasional map sensor code "sometimes" which made me think it was a leaking vaccum hose, so i after a few trys of trying to find the leak i just unplugged the m.a.p. sensor and she revs great, so i'll get a new map sensor and see if that corrects the problem.

I know that timing in a carbed engine is set by turning the distributor but with TBI i am under the impression that the computer adjusts to what it thinks is right after you turn the distributer. So my question is how do you set or adjust the timing in a TBI engine? Is it necessary to use a computer or what?

The 3rd post down has links to some great threads with a step-by-step on how to check/adjust the timing.

Thanks a lot!! Maybe I need to work on my searching because somehow I didn't find any of those posts or tech articles before you linked that. Thanks again.
