key switch ignition problem

Having a problem starting my 91. Battery is okay, ignition relay is clicking, starter is alright(started car by jumping starter). Car has VATS and has needed me to press the key upward to make the resistor connect but now that is not working. When trying to start, I can hear the fuel pump prime. I don't know if it is the key cylinder or the switch with the rod?

Car: Only a daily driver, but comin home
Engine: I have one that runs ;)
Transmission: Caged hamster that runs really fast
Axle/Gears: They are round, I know that much
there should be a VATS relay, check that, and also check the VATS fuse, if there is excessive resistance in either one that could be the problem.

also is this when the car has been running for a while or is this anytime hot or cold engine???

or the hole for the resistor in the key is worn out, and in that case get the correct tumbler and install it, it is relatively easy and the tools are cheap, plus it is a great money make if others have column problems

if you live anywhere near Chicago i would come and do it for you

It turned out to be the ignition switch further down the column had burned out. Looked like it shorted the power lead(big yellow wire) going to the starter relay.

check all your wires to make sure they are not shorting out to avoid burning out a new switch or even worse, , starting a fire.
