Whats the best way to go about this
Hey guys, here's my problem. I bought an 85 camaro with a 406 small block which is carbed. The car used to have the 305 TPI motor. The original wiring harness is still in the car. I dont use about 80 % of it. Now i'm tearing the motor out so I can can paint the engine bay and the car. I'm converting all of my guages over to mechanical auto meter. I'm also running my electic water pump and fan off of two toggle switches. Do I even need any of the old wiring harness here?? The gas tank still has the fuel pump inside of it, I was going to take it out so i can run a mechanical pump off the engine. How much of the original harness will i still need besides the lights?? Can someone run through exactly how i should do this?? The car has a 4L60 trans and there is one plug that goes to it so i'll obviously need that. Also I'm running a MSD 6AL Ignition box and pro billet distributor. Thanks for the help!!!!!

If you are going carbed you will need the power (pink) wire to the distributor, turn on (brown) wire to the alternator, and all the wires that are coming off of the starter. The wire going to the trans could be removed because you are not running a computer to control the lock up convertor. You will also need the wires to the wiper motor if you are going to keep it.

Today i seperated all of my wiring in the engine bay. All of the old wires for the fuel injectors and sensors come out of the passengerside, how can I disconnect everything from the computer?? Can I just take the computer completly out now being that i'm not really using it to run anything? Now with the MSD pro billet distributor, coil, and 6AL box, What factory igniton wires will I have to keep?? Also there was a wide plug that had about 10 wires that came out of the driverside firewall and ended the by fuel canister behind the headlights. It was just laying there, I looked under the dash and only two the the wires were still hooked up, the rest were cut and taped off. Anyone know what that plug was for?? Thanks

Sounds like you are talking about the speed control harness. I would remove the entire computer and plug the hole in the kick panel where the harness enters the body. On my pervious post I had the wires that you will need to keep for the ignition, starter, and alternator. Also be sure to run relays for your fan and water pump the switch alone will work for a while but it will burn up the switch over time, also use circuit breakers instead of fuses. If you can on the fan find a resistor to run in line to kick the speed down a little it will help it work better and run cooler I am using a resistor off of a 2002 ford tauras cooling fan it was around $30 I think.

Ok, tonight i took out the computer and the harness that leads into the engine compartment. The wires that i unplugged from the computer that lead throughout the dash, what do i do about them? Do they stay or do they have to come out?? Thanks
