brake light switch replacement

I bought a new brake light switch from GM. Tried to screw it in (with the retainer still installed on the pedal), and it started to crossthread and shave off thread on the plastic switch. OK, so I pulled the retainer out, mounted it on the switch in the proper position, pushed it into place ont the pedal, and the retainer just slides down and bottoms out on the switch, it does not want to go into the pedal. What's the peoper sequence? My Monte Carlo wasnt near this difficult, I was able to swap it out in a Sams parking lot in the dark with only my cell phone for light! I went ahead and bought a new retainer, so both that and the switch are brand new, so all should go pretty easily I assume, I just canot figure out the proper steps. Or maybe Im a dumbasz
