Choke light, blown fuse...hood scoop?!!

1984 T/A 305 4bbl (H). First smelled a wire cooking, then a mile or so later the choke light comes on. Choke relay buzzing when its cold. Fuse is blown. Couple weeks go by of fiddling as well as a handful of fuses. Not the alternator, not the choke, not the choke relay, not the high idle solenoid, not high idle relay, not the oil pressure switch. Finally after pouring through wiring diagrams, unplugged the wire lead going up to the power bulge hood vent from the vacuum switch. That was it.

I recently performed the test to see if my hood solenoid worked, and when i pulled the vaccum line from the vaccum switch, the wire going to the solenoid got extremely hot and started smoking almost instantly. When I applied vaccum again, the wire went back to normal temperature. Then I tested the hood solenoid with 12 volts separately and it did not work. Would this mean that the solenoid is probably shorted out and this is the only broken component? I don't know what else to test to see if there is more wrong than just the hood solenoid. I'd like to get it working since the entire car (84 T/A) is completely original with 61,000 miles. Is there something else that I should test? Help. Thanks.

That would be my guess. Does the flapper and linkeage move freely?

It sure does. I also saw a post somewhere on this forum about rebuilding the solenoid. I'm going to make sure there is correct voltage to the wire harness and then pull the solenoid and see what I can do. In the mean time, I'll prop the flap open and see how the car performs. Others seem to report the car accelerates better than ever after removing the flap.
