Starting problem
Hey you guys, I have a 91 RS that I have had issues with for a little while starting. When I go to turn the key it will just make a click noise. (Not a dead battery noise) If I move the key back and forth a little bit you can hear something making contact and the car will try to start until I can find the sweet spot and then it fires right up. The clicking noise is the relay in the kick panel but I got a new one of those a while ago and it still did it. I'm thinking ignition switch but before I start throwing parts at the problem I wanted to run it by you guys and see if you had any other ideas.
Thanks,
R.S.

Re: Starting problem
Many years ago I had a situation where I 'thought' I had 'key problem'. The engine would not even try to start when I turned the key. After 'jiggling' the key and re-trying it would eventually start perfectly. In my case, the starter was the problem. It was 'going bad' and sometimes it would start right up, other times I thought I had had to 'play with the key'. So actually the the key was not the real problem. It just 'appeared' to be associated with my problem. It was quite misleading. Just something to consider for your situation.
Also, here is a link to a discussion of the VATS system.

Note the section under 'System Operation'. If you can verify that the proper voltages are being sent after turning your key and your security light matches the discussion you would know if your key is or is not part of the problem. In other words this is something you can try to verify when suspecting your key is part of the problem.
