Fuel Gauge Help!

I had previously assumed that my sending unit was bad as my fuel gauge is inoperable. After digging into it a little bit, I have found that there is no voltage to the plug at the sending unit.

The fuel gauge stays pegged past full. I've changed gauges to rule that out, and when you reinstall the gauge it moves from empty to full then stays pegged at full, so the gauge is operating I assume?

The car was originally CrossFire Injection. It was then later switched to a carb, and then a carbureted 350 was installed by me. I have no clue what the previous owner did when they did away with the CFI.

Where should I go from here? Does anyone have a wiring schematic for this? I'll be driving this car from Florida to Ohio so I would REALLY like a fuel gauge. Help!

DON’T BE FUELISH

Because the replacement gage acted the same way it’s probably the sender or sender wiring.

Ground the sensor input to the gage.

If the gage moves towards EMPTY it confirms you have an open from the tank sensor or a bad sensor.

Fog lights are not driving lights. They look dorky. Turn em off slow pokes.

How bout those dorks too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime!

Re: DON’T BE FUELISH

I had the exact same prob, do what nina said to verify bad sender, which it probably is, and replace it like did, and it works.

Re: DON’T BE FUELISH

Alright, believe it or not, I had 3 combined problems.

Number one, the PO removed the in tank fuel pump and placed a piece of hose in it's place. In the process, they removed the wire that goes from the sending unit to the bulkhead fitting on top of the unit.

Number two, I had a short in the wiring to the fuel gauge.

Number three, I had a problem with the gauge cluster contacts. I resolved this by wiring the fuel gauge separate, but I'm still having problems with some of the lights and the turn signals in the cluster, so I got another cluster from U-Pull-It.
