Definitive Answer on 4th Gen Power Window Switches

Hey all

I've done lots of searching and experimenting and I've never been able to get 4th gen power window switches working properly in my 91. The best results I got were one window would go up and the other would go down.

I can find about half a dozen threads that describe how to do it, but the funny thing is, but none of them work for me, and strangely none of them seem to mention how to deal with the driver's side double switch!

I've got the wiring diagrams for the switches for both gens and still can't get it right.

I've now got a complete 4th gen interior installed and I'd really like to finish it off with properly wired switches. I think we need a definitive answer on this subject and maybe it should be a sticky?

Thanks everyone - this board is truly invaluable

Which configuration do you want?

A ▬ The driver’s switch only.

B ▬ The driver’s and passenger’s switches.

Also, with or without the express feature?

Re: The Windows Knows

well, if this is to be the definitive answer, it would be nice to have all options described... but i think in my car i would want B, one on each side... i presume it's not possible to get all three switches working (the dual switch on the driver's side and the single on the passenger)?

hadn't even considered the express down feature... again, it would be nice to know how to do it...

cheers Tom

The third and fourth gen motors work the same way. Polarity is reversed for up vs. down.

Here’s the driver and passenger with express:

Along with the switche(s) you’ve obtained you’ll need to get an express module.

The driver’s switch contains left and right window control.

The passenger switch has right window control only.

They are wired together in such a manner that prevents a short when the driver and passenger simultaneously press the switches in different directions.

Driver’s switch terminal A goes to ground.

Driver’s switch terminal B goes to passenger’s switch terminal B.

Driver’s switch terminal D goes to express module A, and to terminal B on the left window motor.

Driver’s switch terminal E goes to express module E.

Driver’s switch terminal F goes to the window circuit breaker, passenger’s switch terminal A, and express module C.

Driver’s switch terminal C goes to passenger’s switch terminal E.

Passenger’s switch terminal D to terminal goes to terminal A on the right window motor.

Passenger’s switch terminal C to goes to terminal B on the right window motor.

Express module terminal D goes to terminal A on the left window motor.

Here’s the driver and passenger with express:

Wow... sounds like you know your stuff... any chance though of a revised explanation using the wire colours for us newbies?

How about without the express module?

Cheers Tom
