fan help please
my 89 camaro has a toggle switch fan but my problem is that if im stuck at a light for like 5 mins the wire heats up and starts smoking forcing me to turn the fan off the wire going from the batt to the fan is becoming discolored and burnt,also the wire going into the toggle is melting any ideas on my problem wire is 14-16 guage.im thinking my wires are to small but if that was comfirmed that would be nice.my ground is 10 ga and nothing is going wrong with it.

Re: fan help please
Switch is not designed to operate the fan directly.
Is supposed to be used to operate a fan relay which switches the much heavier current load the fan needs.( which is burning your wire out)
Read this for better understanding

Re: fan help please
If you stalled one of these temp switches ( and a relay ) you would never have to think about turning the fan On/Off again
Fan would run when engine gets to 195F and stop when it cools down to 175F
Also available in 185F on / 165F off

Re: fan help please
The problem you're having is the reason relays are installed for these situations. You will continue to have lack of comfort and calm as well as safety issues until you get a relay in there

Re: fan help please
if you have the fans on a toggle, hope at the very least you have it fused. I put mine on toggles, and fused. 30 amp blade fuses, and two 30 amp toggles, 10 or 12 ga wire for power/ground. Yea I did that after the relay went out. Um, one thing... just have to always make sure to switch those toggles off when turning the car off I once left them on... didn't do that again!

Re: fan help please
If you're set on having manual control of your fan, It's not like you have to go get a relay and figure out how to hook it up, you should have it all sitting in your car already, it's just been bypassed. You just need to wire the fan to run off of the relay like it did before, but run your switch to ground and to the green with white stripe wire on the relay that used to go to your fan switch to actuate the relay. Less extra wiring as well

Re: fan help please
Take it from personal experience ... the toggles can be "rated" anything the manufacturer wants to "rate" it at - doesn't really mean it will actually handle the amperage. 99.99% of all these switches are China made, and they don't care - they just print "30 amp" on the package, but the components are so cheaply made these days that in reality they never handle a constant 30 amp draw.
Use a relay - much much safer - no excuse not to - takes 5 minutes to wire, relay costs $9 at any parts store. You're just begging for a fire (I'm surprised by your description you haven't lost the car to a fire yet).
Auto relay generally is a SPDT relay, with 5 prongs marked 85, 86, 87, 87a, and 30. Wire it as so:
85 = 12v+ from your switch
86 = any ground
87 = to fan positive
87a = not used
30 = 12v+ from battery
87 and 30 need to be nice sized (10 guage or better) wire
The others can be anything since they have little amperage on them
Mount the relay under the hood, can hide it anywhere. The relay gives the fan dire4ct battery power without running that high amperage battery power into the cabin. You never want to run high amperage wires into the cabin if not necessary (and it's never necessary if you use a $9 relay).
But also seriously consider a seperate fan controller - they work great, easy to wire, many are fully adjustable temp ranges. I run a Flex-a-lite unit - cost $100 but it's the best $100 I ever spent! One day, for whatever reason, you'll forget to turn on the fan, and cause some serious problems. Why risk your car on your concentration/memory?
Good luck!
