Voltmeter showed 25 volts on alternator!!!

Car: 1990 IROC
Engine: 305
Transmission: T5
Axle/Gears: 3.42
Voltmeter showed 25 volts on alternator!!!
My volt gauge is pegged out in the red above 18 and volt meter showed 25.5 volts. What is up with this??
