gas gauge question

I've had my gas tank in and out over 10 times in the past year.5 times in the past 2weeks.partly because of rust and fuel pump. But my gas gauge was reading way past full.last time I had it out I mad sure it didnt hang up and got a corect reading.added fuel, about 5 gallons and it was reading half tank.Thats about where it should have been.Started it up today and it went way past full like before. Is this what they do when the sending unit gose bad?I'm getting tired of dropping my tank and I'm NOT cutting a hole in my car.

Re: gas gauge question

yes the gauge is the rod with the float on one end and the coiled wire thing on the other it operates off of restance in witch order i forget but theres 1 wire from that resestor thing to the cluster and if u get a bad spot in the resistor or {sender} or a bad spot in the wire under the carpet you will get an innaccruate reading
