82 trans am lights died (running lights, dash backlight, driver's side foot well)

82 trans am lights died (running lights, dash backlight, driver's side foot well)
this is on a 1982 Trans Am daily driver with 122,000 miles. bear with me coz it's more than one thing:
a few days ago the dash backlight went out, while driving at night. i checked and found the driver's side foot well to be out also. that same night or the next night, i noticed i was driving around with headlights *only*, no other exterior running lights. up to a few nights prior, exterior running lights had been fine for sure so all these outages are fresh. i don't know if they're inter-related.
additional info: all exterior lamps are good. all fuses are good. i reseated fuses and it made no difference. the headlight switch has been quirky the past few months, sometimes leaving headlights halfway up and off, or fully up and off, which it never did up till then, so it might be suspect. here's a list of other lights that are *still* *good*: interior & exterior turn signals and 4 ways, and their dash indicators. headlight low beams and high beams, and dash high beam indicator. exterior brake lights. interior dome light and passenger side foot well. dashboard lights for choke, parking brake, engine light, and fasten seatbelts.
i have a multimeter and basic tools. any ideas on what to check?
