Wiring Disaster.

I've been having problems with the wiring of my 87 camaro since i bought it, eventually i'd like to replace the whole engine as the one in it now is very tired, and has been abused. But for now i need it to last a little longer.
My main problem is with the idle, it is very unstable, going from lurching and jumping to missing and sometimes stalling. And when it stalls it feels like the battery barely has enough power to crank it over again.
Wiring is not my specialty and this has got me very frustrated, any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Wiring Disaster.

get your battery and alternator tested and then make sure all your grounds and alt wires are clean and tight.

Re: Wiring Disaster.

I got descent voltage out of the alternator and the battery has been replaced, If the grounds are bad will you see any resistance between the connections when you use a voltmeter?

Probably not, this type of fault is insidious. When on ohms scale, a dmm passes a tiny amount of current through the circuit being tested. This type of 'bad connection' may be perfectly capable of passing this test current, but exhibit resistance to the massive current required by the starter. A resistance of just 0.1 ohms would be enough to kill your starter at the currents involved, but this would be pretty much a background reading for most dmm's.

If you have the meter reading volts, you may see a voltage drop across the connection being tested, but only while the high load is being applied, ie cranking. A digital meter may have trouble displaying this, due to the probable fluctuating nature of the fault / current draw requested, and the dmm sampling rate.

Best to physically check all the connections on the ends of all the big cables as advised above.

Re: Wiring Disaster.

Got it, I checked the battery, plenty of voltage, also load tested it. when i get a chance I'll start pulling grounds and cleaning them. Any place in particular to look? Do I just have to do the engine bay grounds or could this be a ground for the computer under the dash or something?
Thanks for the help guys.
