Re: Jeep cherokee and Astro van steering shafts
I thought I would let anyone know that is planning on doing this, it is a rather easy project. However if you have headers (I have the 1.75" SLP headers on my 1987 Formula) getting the original shaft out was a bit of a challenge. I had to push the front of the shaft down and into the pocket to the right of the steering box, and I had to move some of the brake lines. Also the steering box on mine had this little spike on the end of the shaft I had to get past and the plastic shield wanted to catch on it, which did not help. If I did not have the headers it would have been cake as there would have been a lot more room in there. I am not sure I could get my original shaft back in at this point because it was so close.
Once you have the original shaft out, it was super duper easy to get the new shaft in and locate where to put the notch on the steering wheel shaft coming thru the firewall.
I have yet to drive it (middle of winter here) but am looking forward to see if there is an improvement. I will compare it to my 89.
Just thought I would give a heads up.

Re: Jeep cherokee and Astro van steering shafts
If you have headers you should move the brake lines to the other side of the steering shaft. Once the shaft is out of the way, bend the lines so they go closer to the frame and K member then put the steering shaft back in on top of the brake lines. It gets the lines away from the headers and give you more room to work in that area.

Re: Jeep cherokee and Astro van steering shafts
Sorry for the delay for anyone waiting on a shaft. My first grand baby came into the world and I got a little behind. All previous orders will be shipped out this afternoon and I have a few more to go out this weekend. I do have more available

I probably should have written this a few months ago. I got an Astro shaft 5-6 months ago and it was shipped quick. It came in well packaged and painted well. It bolted in perfectly. There was plenty of clearance w my dyno dons headers. I was able to get more clearance w my brake lines. The car steers much better. Why get a DSE shaft when these are available? All around great.

Re: Jeep cherokee and Astro van steering shafts
Got mine from robertfrank a few months back. 2-3 drives with it on and digging it so far. On-center feel is the best it's ever been. In the past few years I have put on new lines, gotten new tires, replaced my stock steering wheel with one from a Z24 (this surprisingly helped, I wasn't expecting it since my stock wheel wasn't loose at all) and now did the steering shaft. My old shaft wasn't worn much at all but probably would be soon since the boot was torn from header heat or just being old. The Astro shaft helped the feel. I haven't been able to autocross it yet since this year I am racing 1/5th scale R/C Dirt Late Models which is AWESOME.
