Lt1 into a 82 trans am.

Hello everyone!!

I've been searching the boards to see who's done an lt1 swap into an 82trans am but I can't find anything. The car has a 305 in it right now with a 700r4. The trans was installed a couple of years ago.

I was wondering what all needs to be changed and or modified. Like would I need a new fuel tank, exhaust system. I wanna have an automatic, right now I have a 700r4 would that work. What about the dashboard do would I need to change anything.

I know this has been explained before but I haven't been able to find anything a bit more specific for that particular year trans am.

Thanks for any help.

Chris

Look up about 5 lines from where this post is in this forum right now. Ls1 lt1 swaps. The links in there will cover most all of it. Swapping it into a 82 with a 700r4 is the same pretty much as any other thirdgen.

Have fun.

Swapping from carb to LT1 and using a 700r4 is one of the more difficult LT1 swaps.

I'll post what i think are the easiest solutions, there are other solutions.

Since you have a carb -
Need the fuel injection hardlines from a thirdgen. Best place to get them is a junkyard, have them take them off, make sure the main line in the back by the gas tank isn't cut. Get a tpi/tbi sending unit and in-tank fuel pump.

Since you have a mechanical speedo -
Best thing would be to swap gauges from a newer thirdgen with an electronic speedo.

Since you want to use the 700r4.

93 LT1. Need 93 TV cable, and do a little wiring to make the 93 transmission connectors hook up. Wires are the same, connectors are just different.

94-97 LT1. Need a 93 TV cable. Need 93 throttle bracket. Need a 93 throttle body to make the TV cable work. However, i have heard Holley makes an adapter for like $10 to make all LT1 throttle bodys work with the 93 TV cable, that would be worth looking into. To make your speedo work - remove speedo gears and pound on a 4l60e reluctor, then use a 4l60e vss. Get a TCI lock up kit and install it.

For all the other stuff, check out the LTX and LSx swap board, above.

Car: 04 Dodge SRT-4, 91 formula firebird
Engine: 2.4 L4, 305 tbi
Transmission: 5-speed, 700 r4
The 700 r4 transmission will work. I have a 91 firebird that im going to swap to a LT1. I dont know how much harder it will be seeing that you will be switching from carb to fuel injection but all the 4L60E is an electronic version of the 700 r4. Good luck on the swap.

The biggest difference between the 700R4 and the 4L60E is the VSS. Just look for the problems that Firebat ran into having to swap the way the VSS operates between the two and the drivability problems when the LT1 PCM doesn't have the signal from the tranny.

The 4L60E doesn't have a TV cable. I hate TV cables.

Correct on the holly adapter for the tv cable but use a carbide bit and drill slowly, the throttle linkage is hardened. But it works great.

Search under my username and/or for project82LT1.. I have posted before about where to get fuel fitting, custom a/c lines, a few other things..

Been there done that, send me some emails and I can get you started, Zepher on the board also helped with the swap.

You can use your existing fuel lines, requires some compression fittings.

The main thing was dropping the fuel tank and putting a tpi sender and walbro 255lph intank pump in there..

Rather than goof with stock gauges I ended up going all custom with my dash..

More than one way to skin a cat. FWIW I originally went with a 4l60e and it was dead shortly after a few bolt-on mods..

my car started as a carbed LG4 with a 3speed auto..

Now head and cam LTx with a t56. The engine is out again getting stroked etc. now so things are fresh in my mind again.
