When I searched about a year ago the cheapest crate 350 was the 2k. You could always find used one out of a wrecked truck or car.

Just purchased a GM Goodwrench 350 crate motor from Summit. It's the base long block and cost 1690 including shipping.
It's supposed to get 260 HP/300 TQ (at the crank) with 1 5/8 headers, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and 4 bbl carb.
There is definitely a noticeable performance increase over the old 305 LG4. I'm happy with it!
I think the GM warranty on this motor is limited to 12000 miles for vehicles that did not come stock with a 350, like my 84 TA.
