What bolts to a 700r4?

This is question of curiosity but I have a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro with a 305 throttle body injected engine mounted to a 700 R4 automatic transmission my question is what is the biggest engine that would bolt up to a 700 R4 along with using the accessories that came off the 305. I know the intake would fit the 305 what about the heads?

The 305 is a small block Chevy V8.

Its accessories fit other SBCs and nothing else.

This family of engines has come from the factory in sizes of 262.5, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, & 400. Most of them date back to the 50s and 60s, and are not good swap candidates for any number of reasons not least of which is the simple old-age (they're long since worn out) and poor quality control of the parts from back then.

Of those, the most practical bolt-in, is the 350; specifically, one of about the same age as or newer than, your 305.

It is also popular to use a crank with the 400 stroke in a 350 block, which if the block is bored .030" as is typical to renew the bores after they have been worn to the point that they don't support "new" performance anymore, gives a 383.

You don't want to re-use the heads off of your 305. Of all the components of a motor, the heads are The One that establishes the upper limit on its potential performance; and those heads have among the lowest limits of ANY stock heads for SBC.

Best quickest eeeeziest cheeeeeeepest lowest-risk and otherwise most satisfactory drop-in engine for a situation like yours, is a 96-2000 truck 350 (aka 5.7), with minor modifications, any necessary repairs and renewal, a 4-bbl carb intake, a TBI adapter, a 350 TBI, and a little appropriate programming.

Re: What bolts to a 700r4?

To answer the original question, the biggest engine you can bolt to it is a tall-deck big block Chevy V8. With a 4.625" bore and a 5.6" stroke, the absolute maximum possible in a stock-dimension aftermarket block, that's nearly 800 cubic inches, or 13 liters. But your stock (I assume) 700R-4 won't hold more than a stock 454 (7.4L) at best. Even a max-effort 700R-4 build won't last long behind anything more than a mild 502 or 496.
Technically, you could bolt a Duramax 6.6L turbodiesel to it, but it won't survive that either. Someone did swap one of those into a third gen, but never finished it, and wasn't trying a 700R-4.
You could also bolt any variation of the newer LS V8s to it, but better to go 4L80E or T56 or TKO, same as for anything over a 502.

And of course, your 305 accessories won't bolt to any of those others as you specifically asked, because they're not Small Block Chevys.

I overlooked that, my bad.
Transferring the accessories is possible if you change the mounting bracketed, but that's not cost effective unless you're a pro at metal fabrication.
