Car: '88 IROC-Z
Engine: 305 tpi
Transmission: 700r4/OD
exhaust leak
What's the best way to detect an exhaust leak?
When my car is at an idle, exhaust sounds fine but when I get on the gas, I hear a "sputtering" noise somewhere under the car. It sounds like it's somewhere between the headers and the cat pipe.
I guess my question is, does anyone know how I can find the leak myself? Is there some kind of trick I can perform to see where the leak is coming from?

From my experience, you have to get under the car to detect a tricky leak. Just be sure that you keep safety in mind and wear some goggles when doing so. Also having a friend help makes a big difference. (For hitting the gas and the like...)

Typically, an exhaust leak is found by hearing a "tick tick tick" type noise that fluctuates with the rpms. a leaking cat would be a popping/hissing noise if im not mistaken. but the tick means exhaust leak.
