O2 Sensor required in race car?

Sorry to ask such a n00bie question, but I can't find this anywhere in the FAQ or on any third gen websites.

Dear friends,

I've just installed a set of hedman shorty headers in my 87 TPI 5.0 IROC Z/28. I am very pleased with the install, only had to take 1 engine mount loose and jack the engine up 1/2 inch to get the drivers side on.

My question is.. The stock exhaust manifold (driver's side) had a sensor (i THINK it is the O2 sensor) -- (i assume to feed info to the A.I.R system which is long since removed from my non-street legal race car). I believe that I do NOT need that sensor in my header, though I have a screw in bung welded in there (capped now) all ready to go in should I need it.

thoughts? Is this the 02 Sensor and is it required? or only for A.I.R??

Brian

Or, to put it another way:

It is needed. Make sure you install it in your new headers. It is needed for the ECM to make mixture control decisions.

It doesn't have anything to do directly with A.I.R.

Re: O2 Sensor required in race car?

I just pulled it out of the exhaust manifold, AFS 16P is the part number. I assume that it's better to just put a NEW one in instead of re-using the old one.

I'll pick one up and go with the new.

thanks guys,

brian

Re: O2 Sensor required in race car?

I just want to report back to the group that I was able to tap and drill out the bung-hole with a 7/16 hole and insert the new O2 sensor in the header tonight. Those tips of using a 7/8 inch wrench were RIGHT on, worked like a champ.

So, I am hooking up the Y-pipe and Magnaflow tomorrow and thursday and heading to the races on Saturday.

THANKS EVERYBODY!
