hooking the air back up

Hey all,

I got pulled over by the EPA tonight for random visible inspection and they discovered that my air pump was disconnected. I never knew my car had an air pump to begin with so I need to hook that stuff back up.

What all do I need. The pump seems to be blocked off by a carefully cut piece of plastic and my catalytic is not stock...its a magnaflow highflow catalytic. Any advice would be greatly apreciated

Re: hooking the air back up

wish it was the police...they would have been nicer about the situation and gave me time to fix it. No this was the ministry of transportation who pulled me over. Their own special little polution control agency. Told me the airpump was disconnected, gave me a fine and told me I have 14 days to fix the issue, pay the ticket or they would come to my house, pull my plates and take my car. But its cool, I explained the situation to my neighboor and he told me how to hook it up so we are all good.

Your experience needs to be read by every person on this board who says "remove your smog crap, you dont need it." I've been fighting those people for years. Yes you do need your smog equipment, and I'm glad I now have your experience to show those guys.

I'm also glad you got it fixed and can enjoy your thirdgen again.

Re: hooking the air back up

This is too 1984'ish to me.

I can see being pulled over if you're smoking or reeking of rich fumes. And we do have mobile emissions monitors here in TX now, that take a picture of your license plate number and send you for an emissions test if your car pollutes too much.

But to be pulled over and have the AIR system checked? My EGR is invisible unless you take the SuperRam off. Does an EPA inspector expect me to pull the SR off so they can make sure I have an EGR?

My 87 Sunbird didn't even have AIR from the factory.

I was just comparing emissions numbers on two 89 GTA's, both L98's. Mine is lower mileage (about 1/5th the mileage). I have AIR, the other car doesn't.

High mileage GTA with no AIR

High Speed
HC 220-standard 4-my reading
CO% 1.20-standard 0-my reading

Idle
HC 220-standard 16-my reading
CO% 1.20-standard 0.01-my reading

My GTA, low mileage with AIR

High speed - 876 RPM (25 mph)
HC 144-standard 71-my reading
CO% 0.92-standard 0.23-my reading
NOx 1017-standard 117-my reading

Low speed - 0 RPM 15 mph
HC 148-standard 74-my reading
CO% 0.83-standard 0.31-my reading
NOx 1110-standard 145-my reading

Why does a 170,000 mile no AIR car get better emissions than a 35,000 mile AIR car? (HC of 4 and 16 vs 71 and 74)

Then again, in California you could be fined for putting a catalytic converter on a pre 1975 car. Go figure.

Re: hooking the air back up

you might have an exhaust leak on your high-milage GTA in this case

we all know that smog stuff on our cars is basically heavy and takes up a lot of space in the engine bay, but there was a reason why it was installed.. i'm gonna keep it, no matter what. the air-pump doesn't take a lot of power to be driven, egr is only active when specific parameters are met so imho can't be considered to be parasitic on horsepower either. air reduces emissions because exhaust gases can react again in the cat and egr saves gas period.
