Headers and y-pipe question

i have a 1982 trans am i am upgrading the headers and while i was at i figured a new ypipe since all i hace is a cat-back, now im pretty sure these will fit on my car but befor i go spend 800 dollars on car parts just to have them not fit and waist money i could have used on other stuff i want to be 110% sure. heres a link to the site http://www.jegs.com/i/Hedman/500/66481/10002/-1 this is my first time doing anything like this so im a little over cautious.

you will need a new y-pipe so you have no choice about that.

Coated headers are better than painted. They will last longer and look better. If your plans are to sell the car within the next year or 2, then perhaps consider painted and save $$$$.

For pricing, you may want to visit streetsideauto.com where shipping is free and coupons are plentiful.

Do you need the smog stuff where you live? If not, headers without it are easier to install.

And, if this is your first time doing something beyond changing your oil etc, either find someone wit experience (not simply a friend but someone wit experience) or else you could quickly become frustrated.

Experienced folks know that you might be best removing the A/C, alternator, accessory brackets, removing motor mount bolts and jacking up the engine etc etc

They won't get all frustrated about that stuff.

Also, experienced folks won't try to unbolt the stock y-pipe. They will whip out the sawzall and quickly remove the old exhaust.

One more thing: experienced folks also know that the choice of gaskets is more important than all the time people spend surfing and looking at headers. Hedmans are good, Hookers are good, heck, even summit/jegs brands are OK.

The gaskets that come with the headers are junk, Felpros will leak, copper gaskets are crap. I have learned the hard way many years ago and now only use one type and have never ever had another leak on every header install.

With respect to header gaskets that don't need to be doubled, permatexed, retightened etc etc, only dead soft aluminum work best from companies such as Percys and their Seal 4 Good or Mr Gasket dead soft aluminum.

yes, you will pay $30+ dollars for the gaskets but they are worth every penny.

Re: Headers and y-pipe question

ok thank you, i have experiance other than a basic oil change. but only on dead cars where it doesnt matter, the only thing i havent done really is take an engine out, or suspension work, and take off a diff. But itll do me more good to take it to a shop altho id rather not, not too many people around here know how to do a basic oil change

Re: Headers and y-pipe question

I say build your own Y-pipe or have someone build it for you... It really wasn't that hard to do and will give you great clearance!

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...y-new-3-a.html

As far as sealing the header collector... I run long tube Hedman headers see my sig. Some may argue that the ball-flange collector is a restriction but the versitility that they give you is completely worth it in my opinion. Besides that THEY HAVE NEVER LEAKED
