connecting y pipe to headers with donuts help please
edelbrock TES
I can't get the driver side y pipe to fit evenly over the header side for the donut to seal properly. anyone have any tips for this? It's like I need to pull the y pipe toward the front of the car more but it's stuck in place obviously. I took off the header bolts to help but once I got a good seal on the donut I couldn't line the bolts back up for the headers to go in, it's ridiculous.

Re: connecting y pipe to headers with donuts help please
I had the same problem mating a Dougs Y-pipe to Hooker shorty's.
Unfortunately, I can't offer a simple solution.
I wound up carefully cutting the y-pipe flange off at the weld.
It was close enough so that if both pieces were bolted up, I could
do a tack weld. Then remove it, and finish welding on the bench.
Good luck,
kk

Thanks for the reply.
What if you ever want to take it off though, do you just cut the weld? If i had a welder I'd probably do that but I don't. I was thinking of trying thermosteel on it. I'll post later if it will work or not.

Re: connecting y pipe to headers with donuts help please
To clarify, I didn't weld the y-pipe to the header,
I cut/re-welded the y-pipe flange, so it would line up
properly with the header.
Pic on left is original, on right is as installed. Not sure
if you can see how the dr side flange is positioned a
bit differently.
And as far as having your own welder, all I was trying to
convey, is that its a really nasty problem. If I didn't have
my welder, I would have been REALLY p-o'd about the issue.
I don't know what thermosteel is, so color me skeptible.
But good luck, and keep us posted. Ideas that work are always
good to share.

Re: connecting y pipe to headers with donuts help please
Oh that's pretty cool what you did. Thanks for clarifying. I haven't used it yet (tomorrow) but thermosteel is like really thick motor oil that when it cures basically turns into a metal coating. It says it's good for 2400F. I was going to coat it around the metal donut gasket on the driver side. I really don't like doing stuff like this but I am all out of ideas. Next time I'll probably just get switch headers/ypipe and hope for a better fit.
