egr talk..

egr talk..

so as a supernewbi, especially to 80s american muscle, im still grasping how to do it myself with these repairs.. with that said, its been pretty challenging trying to diagnose these problems especially with a tbi motor.. so i need your expertice once again ppl..

egr... i know it basically recirculates exhaust fumes back into the intake thru a valve that opens and closes when it reaches its running temp( please by all means, correct me if im wrong..)

so heres what ive been going through...

at idle, the bird pings and knocks and backfires some.. you can rev it up and easily races to 5k.

at running temp, pings and knocks less. but still backfires. and as soon as you rev it up a couple of times, it starts to "break up " or hesitate at high rpms..

then, before you know it, it it wont rev up passed 3k without COMPLETELY breaking up. today i tried to hold it at 4k and literally lost all power, almost causing the car to die out.

so i looked at my egr, and saw it was stuck open. and it looked as if it was tampered with.. so bought another. got the correct orrifice valve for it, changed it and car pinged less, knocked less, but showed the same problems, only this time it took longer..

while at operating temp and running, i disconnected the egr soleniod. nothing happened. i reconnected it, still nothing happened.

i gotta recheck using my multimeter( which im a complete rookie at also) and use it under OHMS instead of volts...

either way i tested it while the car was running at normal temp and while using the positive lead, i got the same reading of 13.6 out of both wires leading out of the solenoid... car off i still got 13. is that wierd or not??

what can you guys tell me about this, (except that im probably in over my head, that much i know lol)

what can cause my car to die out at high rpms, then to the point where it wont accelerate at all and stall out??
