exhaust route?..

from a 305 t.b.i., is it hard to install true duals?.. or at least a y pipe? curious as single pipes andan exhaust manifold doesn't get me too excited :/
what is the best route to set up a dual exhaust while keeping average clearance.. if you happen to have photo's of your current setup, "h" or "y" i would be very appreciative

Re: exhaust route?..

I have a 1990 rs 305 auto, I unbolted the midpipe punched out my cat and ran a factory midpipe into an exhaust that I welded up its a straight pipe but its got 2 outlets so you can keep dual tips in the back, it sounds damn good. If you have a factory 305 with no other mods I wouldn't be as worried about headers and true duals and more worried about easier and cheaper power, I can tell a noticeable difference in power over my stock muffler setup but its about equal to the power I felt when I went from my stock airbox to an edelbrock open element air cleaner

Re: exhaust route?..

thank you! especially for the quick reply. very good point with the cheaper horsepower as well, i do plan on making some mods, (heads, cam, intake and carb) i was honestly more interested in getting a deap tone growl! :P do you find your single in dual out makes a noise that would compete with the noise of true dual? also what brand of exhaust do you use? magnaflow?

Re: exhaust route?..

I do everything myself. I defineately have a deep deep growl. If that's what your looking for I would go the cheap route if your mechanically inclined cut your exhaust before the axle and put a down turn on it. The exhaust will echo off the ground and you ill get a nice muscley tone and this is without a muffler but keeping the cat. Again I don't use any Brand of exhaust I've got a metabo a grinder and a welder and make everything myself. And I don't have any real dyno numbers but the good ole butt dyno says that true duals and y pipe are about the same in power numbers but true duals are defineately louder but also I felt a low end torque loss. It's not easy at all to do true duals on a 3rd gen. I stuck with what was already there

Re: exhaust route?..

huh, interesting. well thanks! gave me some good ideas to sketch up. so just to make sure, you are running a cat?.. i would need to, because here in canada, or atleast ontario, if the car is older than 88 it doesnt need e-test.. i have an 88 :/

Re: exhaust route?..

oh nice! i suppose you dont e-test it though.. would that process not remove most of the ability the cat has to clean your exhaust somewhat?..
