Don,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Walker 3" cat backs neck down to 2.5" right as they enter the muffler - I had one on my GTA when I bought it. Replaced it with a Magnaflow.

I'm not sure on that but it is easy to cut it back to where it is 3" the 2 1/2 is only right at the end.

The Flowmaster American Thunder CAT back is a true 3in. including the exit/tail pipes.
I have one but cut the tips back.

That muffler sucks, I lost 30 rear wheel HP. VS. the Magnaflow.

Re: 3" Catback
I totally respect your wisdom in this matter.
That being said ...
WOW,
That really does suck.
Does that mean a stock 170 hp car is now a 140 hp car or a stock 260 hp car will lose 30 hp and that would be true of the thousands of cars running them ?
Does that mean a Magnaflow will free up 30 hp on a stock car ?
Just want to know because I really think that CAT back not only sounds good on my car but at least freed up some hp.

Re: 3" Catback
No, that is only one instance.
It would depend on the volume of exhaust your setup is putting out.
I have seen as much as 50HP loss on an engine dyno with Flowmasters.
They were great before anyone else was making better flowing stuff, but those days have gone by the wayside.
In the end there are better mufflers now.

Re: 3" Catback
Since my car is a DD and I don't race it than I’m ok with just knowing that I’m not loosing hp as compared to stock.
I also live in CA so have chosen to keep the stock manifolds and Y pipe. I did replace the stock CAT with a Magnaflow
and what I thought at the time was a nice flowing 3in. system.
All in all it’s the sound of the Flowmaster on my car I like as opposed to the others I’ve heard.
Most of what I’ve chosen to do is most likely not the most popular wrought but works for me.
Just the way I’ve chosen to set up the way my car looks is not the most popular.

Re: 3" Catback
Thanks to Don for this. I bought all these parts and a Mangaflow muffler, everything came to $310. I'll confirm the over the axle piece is 3" all the way, I have it in my garage.
The Magnaflow muffler MPE-12267 is wide open and doesn't look to restrict AT ALL. Don is 100% correct on his muffler choice.
I made a sketch of how the muffler looks internally. It tries to balance the length of internal pipe to each outlet.

Re: 3" Catback
It's probably quiet because it isn't restrictive I love flowmaster sound, I've had it on almost every 3rd gen I've owned. I may even buy one for my car to use and swap the Magnaflow in for track days
I remember when I was a kid, I put metal plates a few inches behind the outlets of my exhaust pipes on my motorcycle to make it louder (and more backpressure). I think flowmaster is similar to this concept... but again I love the sound of them.

LOL.....
I cut the hangar off the mid pipe thinking I would have to move that one. Well, that hangar seems correct. The one that needs moving is the hangar on the driver side tailpipe!

Re: 3" Catback
I just installed the Dynomax/Walker 3" catback system and used a Mangaflow muffler.
BEWARE - don't cut off the hanger on the intermediate pipe before you test fit it. I ended up welding that one back on in the exact same place. The hangar that I had to redo was the hanger on the drivers side tail pipe.
The hanger that comes on the drivers side tailpipe comes off the side of the tailpipe and then up. The hanger SHOULD be directly above the tailpipe. I ended up cutting the hanger bracket off my stock tailpipe and putting it on the new tailpipe.

Ozz1967 - yes to your question. I was just reproducing that kit for $200 less. You can buy just the Magnaflow muffler and use it with the Dynomax/Walker parts.

I just installed a Flowmaster series 80 muffler with custom true 3" piping (not a kit), from the cat back to the muffler and tucked 3" tails. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but this thread sounds to be saying that Flowmaster mufflers cause you to loose HP? I haven't noticed any lack. If anything the HP feels stronger...

As compared to stock I don't believe I lost HP either.
(I don't have any true evidence to support that though)
And I love the way mine sounds and that makes all the difference in the world to me.

Ya, I LOVE the way my car sounds now. As far as I'm concerned it's the perfect tone/sound. My 305 tbi has been rebuilt, but rebuilt to stock specs.

Your best bet for stainless is to buy the Magnaflow cat back kit, it's around $520. You really don't NEED stainless unless you live somewhere they salt the roads in the winter.

If you have the extra $200 get the Magnaflow kit. If you don't have the extra $200 and you have a welder, get the pieces and a Magnaflow muffler and have fun putting it together

WOW, I remember buying my #16829 Magnaflow from Summit for $320? matching from banditexhausts.com. I think that started the uprise of the exhaust price. After that, I've noticed it's never gone back down. Now I see it's up to over $500 and now $535 where I originally matched the price to Summit from. I love my 16829. Quiet at idle and somewhat at cruise, but any bit of romping on the gas, and it opens it's mouth completely. Exactly what I was going for. Fitment was crooked staring at the exhaust tips, but I hear that's common.

Re: 3" Catback
I think Don was referring to 400+ HP cars may lose power with a Flowmaster vs a higher flowing muffler. On a stock vehicle, I doubt the Flowmaster is holding you back any. I just put a high flowing Magnaflow muffer on my car because I'm shooting for maximum horsepower, and it really makes me miss the rusted out Flowmaster I used to have. It was music to my ears.

Re: 3" Catback
As it was already stated. No way is an 80 series going to make you lose power if you're close to stock. Get into heads, cam...etc Then I'd look for a better flowing muffler. I was very happy with my 80 series when I had it on the end of my full exhaust.

2x 2.5" tailpipe will flow more than the single 3" pipe feeding the muffler. The 2x2.5s would keep up with a single 3.5, if anyone made a muffler with those fittings. You would have to go 4" or dual 3" to need more tailpipe.

Re: 3" Catback
I checked these items to install on my TA 85;
WLK-53061 INTERMEDIATE PIPE; $63.97
WLK-54064 INTERMEDIATE PIPE; $46.97
At Summits or Walker site; this pipe is for 1998-2002 Camaro/Firebird.
My questions: this pipes fits 100% on 1982-92 models ? or need adjustment ?
Thanks

Although some while back Magnaflow made some 93441 cats with a 2 1/2" cat adapted to the 4 bolt 3" flanges.
But they fixed them years ago.

Re: 3" Catback
the problem im having is the 54064 intermediate pipe is way short of the converter and is a slip fit , not a flange type end like the 93441 and factory converter has .. guess i will just get a 3 inch slip fit converter on each side and have a extension pipe made ..

Don't mean to take this thread off topic, but I'm curious on the subject of power loss/gain with various mufflers. Has anyone done a study or have any idea about the power loss/gain with the Powerstick or similar chambered mufflers?
