Fuel cell in rear deck?

Fuel cell in rear deck?

Upon removing the carpet out of my car, i found out that a previous owner got lazy with changing the fuel pump and hacked up the car. Thinking about what i could do to clean it up, i thought about possibly dropping the tank and cutting out the spot to drop in a fuel cell. I would have my buddy weld in a support for it and just leave an opening for the sump. Anyone have any negative thoughts about doing this, i havent really come up with any but ive been under the car putting my suspension on in the cold for the past couple hours while thinking about it.

Why not just clean up the area he hacked up and have your buddy weld in a patch? Unless you race competitively and the sanctioning body requires it, I'd just do that. There's always other things to spend money on, right?

Just curious- why bother? Welding on a new panel or an access door would be SO much easier and practical.

80% of cars on the road have access panels for pumps, might as well buy one from jegs or summit and install that. They are nice with rubber gaskets and well designed. I never understood the "hack job" thoughts on this board. That piece of steel there is extremely flimsy and doesn't support anything.

Im planning on putting a cell in anyway, its mostly gonna be a track car so im trying to cut out some weight here and there and im already running an inline pump so i figured id kill two birds with one stone. Its not something im doing right away and it will be covered up but it will still be in the back of my mind that its hacked up there. And it was a hack job, cuts arent straight and they used two little sheet metal screws and a whole **** load of glue to hold it somewhat back together. Plus i wouldnt wanna take the chance on hitting the tank while cutting the **** out, although when i changed the pump in my trans am on my back in the stones i was kinda 2nd guessing myself a little haha. Thanks for the input guys.
