I did this a little while ago. I took out the Cruise control actuator and the charcoal canister and replaced it with my Gas can

Yeap that's it, but hey who likes a gas can stinkin up the back of there car?

I think, driving up to someones house, stealing a green garbage can, and filling that football field sized area of space up with that garbage can would be more useful than using it to store a gas tank... Just my 2 cents.

Re: the is super simple

c'mon guys some people like to always have a gas can with them incase they run out. this way if he runs out he can take the can and walk to a gas station, fill it, walk back. and if the can were inside the hatch every morning he would open the door and gag. its probably not safe to have it up there. what if a plug wire falls off and the spark ignites the fumes. its his car, he thought it would be funny to post his ghetto backwood mod but he just got flamed for it

Re: the is super simple

Do you keep gas in there or is it empty just in case you have to walk to gas station?

If it's empty you are better off getting a new can and leaving it in trunk

If it has gas then the heat from engine will probably expand the tank and the gas will be vented into your engine bay. Not good.

If the engine compartment is full of gas fumes and the carb backfires, what happens next?

Re: the is super simple

he`s right....you are going to be much safer buying a new can and keeping it in the back on the floor......you won`t have a gas smell and you won`t make the obituaries........I just never let the tank get under 1/4

Re: the is super simple

You should actually keep the gas tank no lower then a 1/2 tank as the gas keeps the pump cool, unless is a carbed engine.

Along with what the majority has said full or not, it wouldn't be hard to ignite the fumes, and blow your self up or light your car on fire.

Then I'm sorry for my cup holder comment. Just being a smart $%% I meant nothing by it. It's just that the movement now is to bring the 3RD Gen to a level that is currently being held by the 1st Gen Camaro. Thats why this site wont post the name of a certain haircut. A Gas can in the engine compartment doesn't help the cause. Thats exactly the image that a lot of thirdgen.org's members are trying to shake.

Thanx to gekko, briinging this thread up again, I was able to laugh out loud at some of the comments made about this idea/mod. We need more comedy on here, far too many flames(no pun intended) sometimes. I realize CMJ was not intending this to be funny as mentioned, but Hey! CMJ, don't take yourself too seriously, laugh with us, dude.

Re: the is super simple

as comical as this is, I really don't think its that bad of an idea. True, that if you get in a car accident, it will spray fuel everywhere, but on TPI systems, fuel lines are very close to that location so if there was a hit strong enough to spray fuel everywhere from a gas can, then I'm sure it would tear the fuel lines into the accessories causing the same problem. I would rather keep a gas can outside the car than inside the cabin. Many people run second fuel tanks in the engine compartment for nitrous and such... yes, I know, they are made out of some sort of metal and not plastic. As far a safety, the only thing I see wrong with this is that its missing a proper hold down strap. I honestly wouldn't do it because I never run out of gas I think JC Whitney or one of those, sell "disposable" gas cans made out of thick carboard/milk carton stuff that you throw away after 1 use. Those might be a step up than this. But this IS better than having a filled gas can in the hatch...

new can costs 4 bucks....very cheap....i`m sure the thought was to have extra gas just in case. why not just keep the tank above a quarter at all times and avoid this mod?

It's Empty and my gas gauge does work , I already have a gas can why would I buy another?

What if a friend runs out of gas? It would be nice to not have to go all the way home, or to their house, to get a gas can for them.

I never run out of gas either but you never know, Sometimes its a long way from the bank to the gas station

Re: the is super simple

clearing out the space is not a bad idea. i think everyone can agree on that. maybe a small tool box or somthing of that nature would be a better use of that space. again some may ask, Why not just keep it in your car? well have you seen some of the sound system threads? no space left back there. Even if that does seem funny to you, just remember, Every one hates a red-neck until there car breaks down.

WOW! I thought the red-neck thing was just a stereotype, but then someone posts THIS as a mod? Too cool, best laugh I've had for days. BTW, to the orginal poster, dude it's your car, and if you are happy with it then cool, but if you want to carry around cans of gas, why don't you drive a pick-up? You know, with a gun rack, and a flag in the back window......

If you mean guys in pick-ups with the flags etc, yep except we call them utes over here, and an aussie red-neck is called a bogan LOL, otherwise pretty much the same (no gun racks though, our gun laws means you can't just have a rife in the back of your ute)

Re: the is super simple

Sure he'll come back. I think the idea is very creative, but hilarious at the same time.

Utes, huh? I guess that's kinda like "sport ute" for SUV's ... pick-ups are very "utile". I miss my pick-up. Got a baby now, so it's an SUV for me.

Gun laws suck.

I'm with Chris Rock on the gun laws ... instead of outlawing guns, they should make bullets $300 each. You'd have to want to kill someone real bad to put a $300 bullet in them.

Hey ... I just got an idea ... maybe I can take out my windshield washer reservoir and store my .38 and some extra ammo in there! Sweet!
