V10 in my GTA (LT1/T56 for the beginning)
Hi everybody,
I'm from Serbia (Europe) and love USA cars. I bought Pontiac Trans Am GTA 5.7 1988 two and a half years ago and this is one and only GTA in Serbia. This fact tell you how hard is to find any part for this car and that is very expensive to buy anything from USA because of shipping, customs fees...
Car was in very bad shape, not registered for more than 7 years and have 83000km on odo.
I don't want to bother you, everything I have done for this more than two years is on the pictures, imagine how much money and nerves I spend and how expensive is that in my country, where average month salary is about 450$
I didn't have this plan to put V10 in GTA until a few days ago, when I found first gen Viper V10 engine in my city from crashed Viper for only 1300$.
I had plans to put LS1 or to build up my L98, but this cheap engine change my plans.
At least I need to buy transmission, ECU and engine harness for this project and I try to find all of this from this crashed Viper (engine is taken from Viper two half ago, so it will be a problem to find the car and who knows is there anything yet there)
I have one question for the beginning, is there a possibility to fit 700R4 on V10? I like automatic transmission and this is very rare in my country, so I would like to stay on my 700R4 if it's possible.
These are the pictures from more than two years ago:

So guys, that was my "short" story , so please help to finish this V10 project.
I can see on this forum that this is very rare swap in USA, so I will be for sure first in Europe who will done this (if I succeed)
First and main question is still, 700R4 + V10 = ???

Thats a tricky one. I would also suggest you go join a Viper owner site for some of these questions.

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
Unless the 700r4 is built up, it won't last. Find yourself a T56. Not much of a expert on those engines but I would start measuring and see what adjustments you need to make so it sits right in the engine bay.
Good luck with the swap, you are a hell of a step farther than anyone here by just having the engine already. Hopefully you go through with it.

The 700R4, when built right, can take a massive beating. it just needs to be built to take the power from the new engine.

My 700R4 is fresh rebuilt, but with stock components
However as I see it's better solution to put T56.
So I need Viper's bellhousing and T56. Can anybody tell me is there any differences between Viper, Corvette, Camaro and Firebird T56's?
If I buy Viper bellhousing does it metter which T56 i purchase?

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
It can be done with an adapter, but isn't a great idea. The 700r4 just isn't a great choice for handling a lot of torque, which is what you'll have with the big inch V10. Your just going to end up fighting it blowing up all the time, throwing better parts at it and then breaking it again. There are supposedly parts to make them live, but in the end people usually end up giving up.
If you're really set on an auto I'd be looking for a TH400 if you can live without an overdrive, or maybe a 4L80e or whatever chrysler used behind them in the trucks, though the smaller th400 would probably be my first choice just for packaging reasons.
Otherwise, the obvious answer is a T56 manual tranny since they were used in the vipers and are an easy swap into f-bodies, between the viper and f-body parts you should be able to come up with a combination that bolts in (and if not McLeod makes a slick bellhousing for them that lets you bolt them up in just about any combination)

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
If your 700R4 has stock components it is not going to last for long behind that motor.
In the very least what you'll need are high performance bands and clutches with the clearances set low, upgraded servos, transgo shift kit, beast sunshell and a borg warner 29 element sprag.
Sorry to burst your bubble but with the cost of that adapter kit + the cost to build your 700R4, like has been said a T56 is what makes the most sense.

Hey shone, I am subscribed and found a site for your 700R4. The T56 or T60 is going to run about $2500-3500 new. Try these guys.http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm

My humble 2cents in case I missed it, I would strongly recommend strong subframe connectors or you'll make a twizzler out of your car hehe! But of course, wait and see if you get this in there before putting money out for that. Fun thread!

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
I just took some pictures to see what I bought.
Good news are that I have complete clutch kit with bellhousing
As I saw, there is a lot of engine harness, and everything is connected except these two connectors:
I have this part of engine harness:
but I need to wait for Dodge Viper Service Manual I ordered, to see what part of engine harness I don't have.

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
If you use an Fbody T56 you'll probably have to put a Viper inputshaft/belhousing on it. If you use a Viper T56 you'll have to make a custom crossmember and figure out how to set up your torque arm. The internal parts are not the same per se, but they're all similar. A lot of parts interchange.
I'm not sure using the factory torque arm setup is the best idea with this kind of power, especially if you do a lot of clutch dumps and hard launches, so if you use a Viper T56 and can build your own crossmember you can build a standalone crossmember for a shortened torque arm too.

There is no updates, I checked and find out that first gen VIper has two ECU's and price is about 400$ per ECU Also, I need one part of engine harness between engine and ECU's, and price is about 700$.
I have Viper bellousing so I can put every T56, but had to find out what's the best option for my
I'm waiting Viper Service manual so I can better "study" what I need

Have you tried classified ads on Viper forums?

Just don't tell them what it's going in. Viper owners can be d-bags.
Nice car. I like the red badges on yellow.

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
In the meantime there were so many news
First of all, quite by accidant I found LT1 Camaro 1993.
I change my L98 engine with my friends's friend LT1. He bought complete LT1 Camaro 1993 year (83000miles) for his boat (because he needs engine for boat), and found out that LT1 engine has alluminium heads which is not good for boat. Because of that he gave me his LT1 and took my L98 I didn't know that he has complete car but when I found out, I bought the rest of the car for 700e (about 900$) and guess what, the car is with manual T56 transmission
Today I had all day action, removing L98/700R4, sold 700R4, towing Camaro and LT1/T56...

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
Thanks brdofpry85ta, great site
First problem is here
Today I tried to connect V10 engine with T56 tranny, but there is a problem. I think that problem is in T56 adapter plate which goes between tranny and bellhousing. My plate is for Camaro LT1 so input shaft is too short and can't go enough into Viper's bellhousing.
This is what I'm talking about:
I look into T56 service manual and see that only differences between GM/Viper/Ford T56 parts is in Bellhousings and Transmission front adapter. There is also some Transmission adapter plate assembly (1D), but I don't know what exactly is it and why is that only available for GM T56?!?!

Re: V10 in my GTA :)
theres 3 different input shafts for the t56. one for the ls based engines, one for the lt engine (which fits standard sbc as well with the lt bellhousing) and the one for the vipers.
since you have the lt1 going in the car now, youll need the lt bellhousing/clutch set up and the lt trans since its nearly a direct bolt in. good news is after you swap in the v10, you can keep the same t56. you just have to swap the input shafts and bellhousing. and with a few upgraded parts on the inside the lt version t56 can handle just as much torque as the stock viper t56.
