The next project on my list is a L69 air cleaner restoration, I will post up here as it goes--just waiting for warmer weather. I was going to build a custom L69 style dual snorkel from scratch but I was given this one for free off of a scrapped car, so I am going to restomod a real one instead. This one is in rough shape but most of it is there.
It needs some serious de-rusting, the plan is to strip the paint and de-rust it then fix and repaint it. Lots of body work required...
One of the snorkels has become detached and someone used sheet metal screws to try and re-attach it. I will be plug welding this back on.
They cut a hole in the base and tried to fill it with tape, likely to clear the bowl on a non-QJET. I am going back to a QJET so I will be making a patch and welding it in.
They removed the flaps in the two snorkels for the "heat" I plan on restoring this feature so I guess I will be making these. The vacuum control (thermal switch) is gone, so I will need one of these... it might be the most expensive part in the build ($80 at rock auto!).
It came with both of the plastic parts for the CAI, these just need to be cleaned up.
The hoses are shot. I never liked the look of the factory ones anyway so I am going to try and find another solution. On the air cleaner side it looks to measure the same as a 4.6" hose--just oval (4.5 is close) but the plastic parts measure the same as a 3.8" hose--just oval (4" is close). Not sure what I am going to do here yet. Something cleaner and smoother would be nice, like the silicone hoses they use in Turbo builds...too bad the two ends are not the same size
Very interested in following this. I always loved this setup. I'll be particularly interested in what you come up with to replace the flex tubes. I sure wish those were being reproduced.
I built one of these from scratch for a Mopar, from two single snorkles. At least on the Mopar piece, the metal under the paint is galvanized. I struggled getting that 2nd snorkle welded on until I realized that, and stripped that coating off.
