about the car:
my brother bought this car new and took very good care of it. he then sold it to me when i needed a car for college. that was in 2001. the car had been a daily driver up until 2006. i then bought a jeep and the GTA has been in the drive way up until now. i had hopes of one day restoring it and using it as a summer only pleasure car, but with recent developments i can't do it. i have kept full written documentation of all repairs either done by myself or elsewhere. the car hasn't been driven/moved in 2 years so you will have to tow it. i have made many repairs to this car over the years and even as recently as this month. i always took the greatest care of it doing oil changes early, trans fluid and filter religiously, gear oil for the diff, lubricating everything, etc...there's alot of good on this car. so i'm hoping someone will restore it and enjoy it as much as my brother and i have for these years.
problems with the car:
i recently started it and it had a bad knock to it. it didn't have it when i parked it. it ran for a minute or two then just shut down. i tried starting it again and it wouldn't turn over. i believe it to be seized, but it also could be something stupid. either way i would take the engine apart to see what happened. this engine is a keeper as it's the original and is equipped with the factory hydraulic roller cam so the block is different.
-the trans shifted very good and had no problems except for a leak from the front seal as it's coming from under the inspection cover.
-the engine had one leak from the front timing cover after my friend replaced my timing gear set and chain. that was at 135,000. i never got around to redoing it.
-the car smoked on start up due to the valve seals leaking which are common on these cars. i was planning on getting new heads. the heads are ok, so you could just get new seals put in and go.
-the car has the original delco-morraine rear disk brake set up. i was planning on putting the 1le brakes. when i parked the car they weren't grabbing. just get the kit from ebmiller and don't waste your time.
-ok this isn't a problem but u should know this anyways. there were two rust spots on the car. one on the rear fender flair and one on the front fender flair. both spots were bubbling up the paint and weren't in deep. i had them spot blasted and painted over.
-the stock rear spoiler is original and worn out from the years. the originals were made of urethane and didn't work as well as fiberglass in reguards to durability and paint matching. the paint on it is cracked. i would recommend getting a fiberglass piece.
-both front seats are in desperate need of reupholstery as the leather is torn up real bad from the years.
what works:
-i rebuild the headlight motors and they work perfectly.
-every part of digital dash is in working order.
-rear hatch pull down motor works! that alone is rare!
-rear seats are like new since i never had more than one passenger.
-the tires are new. i got them right before i parked the car. they'are all at 9/32".
-the rear end was in good condition and made no noises.
-i replaced the rear speakers with blaupunkt units. big improvement.
-i replaced the stock radio with a kenwood CD unit. i still have the original.
-i recently bought many new parts for the car when i was dead set on restoring it.
like i said, alot of good on this car. if you have any questions let me know. i'm located in secaucus, NJ 07094.
