82 recaro
my cousin has an 82 recaro trans am, 4spd, 305 carb, hes going to crush it because he doesnt want it anymore, so he asked me if i want anything off it for my 86, what is worth taking off it? im already taking the disc brake rear/lines/booster.
is the rear just a 10 bolt 7.5?
is the 4spd trans anything special?
would the sways be an upgrade over what i have?
what else should i grab?

i may do that, the engine is junk in it, but i do have a pontiac 428 i could drop in it, since its mechanical linkage i could just drop an m22...or ill put my 305 from my 86 in it and put my 350 in my 86.
I still need the specs on it though!!

What condition is the car in overall? Basically it is only a Regular 1982 Trans Am with Recaro seats, and if the wheels are stock, they are gold vs. silver on a regular trans am. Also the door handle inserts should say "Recaro T/A" Other than that, there is no difference. The Crossfire Injection was the more popular engine and you could only get it with an automatic. The 4speed is a mechanical linkage type and was replaced in '83 with a 5speed. I wouldn't trust the 4speed to a strong engine, I mean stock these TA's only had 160 hp with CFI so the carb is probably a little lower.
As far as specs go, just look up the specs of an '82 TA.

Recaro's were only Black w/gold trim.
Had Recaro Seats
Had "Recaro T/A" door handle inserts.
Had Gold Turbocast wheels with gold pontiac logo hubcaps
Had rear disc brakes WS6
so basically it is just your regular Trans Am with Recaro seats, door handle inserts and different colored wheels w/gold logo hubcaps.
There is no other performance options to make it better than a regular TA. It was basically an appearance package. And while Recaros got priority for disc brakes, it doesn't mean a regular TA with the WS6 package couldn't get them either, however there were shortages for regular TA's w/ the WS6 package later on.
One other thing to note, there were 2 variations of the door panel bird insert. There was a red bird with silver outline, almost looking like a second gen bird logo, and there was another one with the new thirdgen logo and it was gold. I do not know if these were on Recaro's or not since nobody can ever give me a straight answer. However the red bird logo (2nd gen looking) DID NOT COME IN GOLD. I don't care what anyone says, if you see them on Ebay as I have countless times, THEY ARE NOT GOLD, they never came in gold. They look gold because they are old, faded, and oxidized. I bought 2 sets off of ebay thinking they were gold, and they looked gold...untill I cleaned them up with plastic polish and then they were in fact SILVER!
Just a side note.

Just a Trans Am with nice seats?
" Many perks that would otherwise be invidivually optional are bundled into the Recaro Edition package. For example, 4-wheel disc brakes, positraction, t-tops, WS6, and quicker steering ratio are all included in the Recaro package"
Look for the gold PMD arrow on the hubcaps, I doubt that they are still there, but non Recaro cars had the red arrows.
Sounds like it has a LG4 mill, there should be no cowl induction, plate is blocked off (1982 trait)
Dont crush it!
The BW 9 bolt was first installed in 3rd gens by Pontiac in 1985 and has several advantages to other rear types.

im still not a 100% sure its a recaro, i havent seen it and i didnt tell him about the whole recaro thing yet, however he said it has disk brakes in the rear for sure and he says he thinks it has the gold wheels, so i asked him about the door handles and he will check tonight
basically, if its a recaro ill take the car, if not ill take the rear and some other parts....btw how strong is the saginaw? and what size are the sways?

Re: 82 recaro
Being a Recaro and an 82 it MIGHT have the aluminum hood, it was an option in 1982 and the original purchaser may have opted for it...
The hood in itself is worth $1000 if its in good shape, if its perfect I might suspect somoene would give you more for it.

Re: 82 recaro
The trans isn't really a performance piece and neither is the rear-end and the rear disc brakes on those cars were particularly problematic (corrosion, seizing, falling out of adjustment). However, as a whole on a relatively rare, complete, and original car they are a small peice of history worth keeping and restoring. I would put it on e-Bay long before crushing it!

the cars junked up guys, i dont have the time or money to fix it up, i will sell stuff off it, and keep what i like, i may have the seats redone, and keep the ground effects and fenders, maybe the recaro door handles, as well as the disk brakes and trans.

Agreed, she's rough as a corn cob. Is that hood latch area completely rusted-away?! The seats look fairly ratted-out too. If you do part it out I'd be interested in the seat tracks!

Re: 82 recaro
Hey, I was wondering if the bump strip on the drivers side fender is in good shape?? It's the one in the second to the last photo. It looks like rust behind in on the fender but I can't really tell. I'm pretty sure the metal part was aluminum and wont rust, but I believe they were just stuck on there with adheasive. Anyway, I need it! Would you be willing to CAREFULLY pry it off and sell it to me?? They don't make those and repros are non existant.
Actually I guess they would both be the same on either side, so if one is better than the other, I'd like the one in the best shape.
let me know.

I've heard of Recaro's getting the "thirdgen" bird emblem on the door panels. I'm not sure if regular TA's got them also, but if they came w/his car they are probably correct. They are probably a little more "rare" than the red/silver bird like you and I have in my TA.

Re: 82 recaro
I'm not sure what your point is, I never said those parts were specific to the recaro. I told him he could make a little money off of the parts I listed.
One question for you; since the car he found is an actual recaro we are assuming all of it is original, correct? Since those silver door panel bird emblems are on his car they must have came with it 25 years ago. Now, since that is the case, how many different style wheels came with the 82 recaro? The wheels he has pictured must be original then too. I'm not sure how the original black bowling ball hubcaps are going to snap onto the wheels he has pictured...

Re: 82 recaro
Things that I do know;
~~The interior door panel bird along with the wheel I posted above are original and did come with my 82 recaro 25 years ago.
~~82 recaro ta's are much more "rare" than plain jane regular 82 black and gold ta's.
~~82 recaro ta's are worth more money than 82 plain jane regular ta's.
~~No matter what kind of interior door panel bird emblems, door handle inserts, or whatever else a person sticks on a regular 82 black and gold ta it still will be a regular 82 ta, and not an 82 recaro ta.
I still think firechicken76 should part that thing out.

i'd like to know this too. i might be picking up a recaro in pretty much the same condition as that one.
what about the disc brake setup? is that of any interest? how much is someone willing to pay for it?

Re: 82 recaro
Last time I priced this out it was going to cost almost as much as it would to buy a new recaro off the net.... I would just try to sell them outright unless you can find a decent upholstery shop to redo them for a reasonable price. From the look of them they'll need to be stripped completely and have new foam and material.
