1990 Firebird Formula question
This came up in a discussion I had with someone at a car show over the weekend. In 1990 Pontiac (and Chevrolet) switched over to the '91 model production in mid year. The total for Formula production is 4,834 cars for 1990. Is this total for the calendar year or for just the cars produced as 90 models? Would anyone know or know where I could find the breakdown between the 90s and 91s produced during that year or is the 4834 total the correct number?

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
It does narrow it down a bit. Mine was built in October of '89. My younger brother purchased a '90 in April of '90 and a '91 in August of '90 but the build dates of both of these cars is unknown.

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
Cool ..Hey what I know of is that 4,832 Formulas were built and sold as 1990 models. About mid-year GM switches and starts getting ready and building the next calender year.So actually in 1990 you would have some 90's models being built and some 91 model Formulas being built in 1990 calender year. The total for the 91 Formulas was 2,610. I think you can find some more info at www.Firebirdnation.com And by the way in 1991 they made only 829 Trans Am GTA's. So it looks like that car might be a good investment

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
Well, that is NOT exactly true...
There are 2 sets of numbers you will find in the Documentation. THe first numbers are 4832 (for 1990) and 5544 (for 1991) the second set of numbers are 2,610 for 1991 Formulas.
The NORMAL prduction run goes from around Sept/Aug from one year to another.
- In 1990 Production of the 1990 started Sept/Aug but ENDED DEC 31 1989.
- The 1991 MODEL year started early, around April or May. Some literature I have found list from the normal Sept/Aug 1989 thru Sept/Aug 1990 and then thru Sept Aug 1991. Other literature has the actual model years production totals.
- THe Standard Catalog of American cars 1976 - 1999 has a note "(Includes 1991 vehicles introduced early in the 1990 model year)" in a reference to its 46,760 TOTAL for 1990. That is where the different numbers come from.
Does that make sence?

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
So does that mean that there were 3,833 (or 3,831 depending on where you get your info) Formulas produced during the '90 model year with the '90 style front, rear and spoiler treatments?

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
1) sources differ slightly on some of the numbers.
2) 2 cars is not going to be earth shaking insofar as value, or historical purposes.
3) I had a typo, 1001 should have been 1991. 1991 being the model year. I appologize.

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
So is the 4834 total JUST the number of Formulas built up to December 31,1989 or does that total include the '91s built in 1990?

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
You know, its hard to say. PONTIAC claims the 4834 as 1990 FORMULA models, with a total of 20,553. In 1991 they have 5544 FORMULAS and 51860 TOTAL.
Thats straight from the PHS sheets I have.

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
I was just wondering what the answer to this question was. My MFD date on the door indicates 09/89, my production number portion of the VIN says 205403. Does the production number have any meaning that is decipherable?
BTW - This guy is claiming 4,832 units UNITS

Re: 1990 Firebird Formula question
Bringing it back from the Dead...
There were 4,834 Formulas in 1990
This only includes cars made thru DEC 31, 1989... Cars made from Jan 1, 1990 thru Aug 1991 are not included
