Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

Hello, I am going to look at a car that I found locally and the advert reads as:

"15,500 original miles, 2nd owner, show room condition, garaged and covered from day one, NO engine or body modifications, automatic 350 TPI c/w WS6 suspension, red with gray interior still has original wheels and rubber."

I did some searching through the forum and I don't believe the car is very rare, but the condition could be outstanding. Assuming the car is mint and as adertivsed what would a resonable price be to pay for such a car?

Thank you

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

It's only going to be worth anything if its in good shape. I saw one on Autotrader and it had 13,000 miles and it looked like it was off the showroom floor and they were asking $17,000. I think they got what they were asking because it was gone the last time I checked. But hey, if you get it for a good price I am sure they are going to come up in value. I remember when 70s firebirds were a dime a dozen and now you can't touch them if they are in good shape.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

Well this one is listed for $20,000 which I think is a little steep. Based on some of the production numbers listed elsewhere in this part of the forum there looked to be allot of Formula cars made in '88 so it's definitly not rare. So how much is pristine condition worth? I am not sure if color matters at all this one is red.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

Lots of Formulas,
Not as many Formula 350s,
Less had T-tops if it has them Especially in 1988...

From your description a PERFECT, show ready, no work to do on it at ALL, including Engine Bay cleanup, I would say $15,000 on the really high end. Of course it would depend on where you are in the country would ultimately determine value. I would not be surprised if that car would sell on ebay for $12,000.

Thanks for the reply John. The car is located in Calgary Alberta Canada. I am still trying to determine if this is a local car or if it was imported from the US. I will definitly check for t tops. I am waiting on some photos for this car to decide if I should go see it.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

I got mine for $9,500 with 22,000 original one owner miles. Needed minor stuff. I did the wing and a little maintenance/tuning up (from sitting). Also put the stock rims back on....and drove it some!!!

Seller wanted $10,500 - I think if your guy is asking 20k, that is a) too steep and b) he won't come down by 40% or so to where he'll sell it soon...especially up there!! There are more out there for 7-10k with less than 20k - you might just have to travel to get it.

I could get 20k for my 17,000 mile TTA.....but not my formula. But I love both!

Picture didn't load - you can see it at my FLICKR site - just search TTA 350 under people search.

I wouldn't touch any third gen right now. Sellers want too much for one that is nice like the above mentioned. But people like me trying to sell one is just plain horrible. There is no market on these cars, stay away unless you plan on keeping it until you die. Andrew

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

I have sold everything I have tried to sell in less than Three weeks. Never lost money...

It probably has to do with where you are... I would not get into it to MAKE money to live on, like if you are selling it because you NEED the money, that puts you in a desperate situation and people know it. I only sell a car if I want to and I really do not care if it sells. Always advertise, it can be expensive but it will sell better than sitting it on your front lawn. I have had great luck with Autotrader and get the run till it sells option.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

There are 2 on eBay right now and let me say they are just gorgeous! If I had the money I would buy both and use them as my weekend driver. One is white and the other red. Check out the door openings, trunk and engine bay areas of the white one, that was taken care of by that owner, very nice.

I would love to sell my current red bird, I get a lot of it is nice stuff, but talk is cheap and when it is money time nothing. I live in Miami, and these cars are not desirable down here. The day I get a Firehawk I plan on not driving it after numerous times of saying I would drive it daily, common sense has settled in. I love these cars bottom line. Andrew

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

How about the 91 Formula LO3 base with no options in MGM with 221.8 miles on it on ebay right now? That is a nice car. As of yesterday it was around
12K. Probably close mid to high teens just due to the fact that is has no options at all.

As for the OP, pics would be nice but it all really depends on the time of the sale. A few years ago there was a red 89 Formula 350 with 1100 miles closed on ebay for a little over $12K. 6900 mile 89 Formula 350 that was just plain mint and clean closed for just under $15K. Currently for sale for $19K by Bohnam Chrysler.

The car you describe, assuming that it just needs a minor cleaning and very very minor stuff at most, and the paint shows an easy 15K miles, should be somewhere around $10-14K once again depending on time of sale and advertising method.

Lets see some pics!

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

I bought mine with 8900 miles from original owner, mint in and out back then and garaged it's whole life and let me say it still started to break down here and there because of it's age. Don't think because it's 15k miles it is going to drive like a 2007 car. I would say 6k is a fair price, I saw a red '91 350 in Arizona last year in same description with 26k miles for only 7k. Anything more is over priced. Check out Hawks white "91 5 speed, that car has been for sale for ages and can't get 8k and it has low 40k miles. I have more to mention that I have viewed, 1LE Trans am on eBay, 4k miles and ONLY went for 22,400. Car was solid in and out, that is sad! No market period.

Anyone here see the '92 Tans am on eBay 3 weeks ago for a buy it now of 28K? That car was junked, I though it was a joke at first.

Try typing item number in ebay to see to have a good laugh.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

Yeah, Hawks white Formula has been for sale for a while and it's not a bad asking price, esp considering it has the R15s that have now been doscontinued again and are $1300 painted anyway. It seems like both that car and yours (Andy) shouldn't have a hard time selling. I mean both have low mileage and are in good shape, but more than anything are huge attention getters due to the wheels. After I put the R15s on my 92 TA it completely transformed the car. I constantly have people tell me how badass it looks with those wheels. It's a huge attention getter.
It's weird that these 2 cars have not been sold yet. But I guess it all depends on the market location and time of advertising as well as the advertising method.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

RPM WOT L98 Thanks, but I believe that red bad *** you have is more mint than mine. I am really thinking about painting mine red again, in the doors, engine area, and replacing the wheel wells so the exterior looks brand new, the inside I need new seatbelts, they just are too old looking for the inside and I want a new GM center console. Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

Personally I think one of the problems with hawks is the color, nothing against white cars, but paint it red and he would have sold it a long time ago...

Edmunds used to have a color adjustment for their Value calcluator, it apparently no longer works... Some colors like White, Green, Yellow, & Blue I think are a harder sell than a Red or Black car. Although Green has really been more popular lately, White would be more popular in Hot places like Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Flordia. Yellow is sometimes a Specialty color, I noticed that it was an extra $195 on the Solstace, The orange was $295...

BTW, I never found those 1988 Formulas on ebay.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

I use to love red until I had it, now tired of it. I love the dark metallic blue and white ( sorry ). I first fell in love with the third gens because I went to a video store back in 1990 and in the lot was a brand new white 1991 Formula. That was it for me. I would trade my red for his white in a second. Andrew

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

You should talk to Bruce about it. He's got 40K-ish miles and you're somewhere around there as well right? It would be easier for him to sell a red car, John is right, and you can have him thow in a new center console as part of the deal!

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

what most people are not aware of is the CDN market prices. They are way higher then in the US. Completely different animal. Of course both US and Canada have insane people who want way too much money.....they never sell

Of course with the dollar being on par--the CDN market generally looks unattractive and many buyers, myself included, just go to the US.

Still 20K---a bit high. 15-17 maybe

As for that 221 mile 92--extremely undesirable 305 TBI makes the car not worth much in my eyes. Only reason why it can get that high of a price is the mileage.

Re: Value of a 1988 Formula 350?

I know a lot of poeple want to compare NEW prices to NOW prices, but they are completely different. $17,000 in 1982 is really different than $17,000 in 1992 and completely different than now. I suspect that $17,000 NOW is about wht $8,000 back in 1992. With the rate of inflation going up the value of the dollar going down, the price of gas through the roof, the values of your cars will decrease automatically. One of the problems is that the value of the dollar is decareasing, the unimployment rate it increasing, the minimum wage is steady, the war is never ending and we have about 537 people to blame for all of it.

That was interesting.
