1992 B4C Project

I finally got the new B4C 1LE project car home this weekend. As many know, I picked it up from Crazy Hawaiian with a ton of extra parts (tokico struts/shocks, energy suspension bushings, new tie-rods, new 1LE rotors and ceramic pads, nice seats) for $1750. The car is very solid, just has some scratches and fading, a few small dings, but no rust! . It's pretty much a car that saw extensive duty as a police fleet vehicle! It has 114K on the odo. It ran fine coming home, but the front-end has a strong pull to the right. Rebuilding the front end is top priority, A friend sourced an extra set of third-gen A-arms, I'll get those loaded and ready to pop in, then get it through safety and all. The stock rims had a flat, and questionable safety, so Shawn let me borrow a set of IROCS to get it home on. Once it is legal I will paint the 1991, then paint this one.

Re: 1992 B4C Project

Started tinkering with it today, the replacement seats are better, but still have major wear on the driver's side. Carpet is beat, and then I noticed the passenger side was damp...a little investigation revealed a big rust hole in the toe board. Firewall seam looks OK, and the A-pillars are fine. No such thing as a rust-free car in Hawaii, I guess sitting in the drive way got it. Should be easy to repair though, I think it can cut out and weld in a patch easy. I'll have another friend that's a welder look at it once the car is legal.

Not too bad on this car...it has a few dings in the body, and there is a hole in the toe board on the passenger side, but should be an easy fix.

Here is how it looked when it was retired:

I also have a 1991, it has some significant pitting on the roof from surface rust. It is actually a tighter car than this one is, but it is non-1LE, so I'll put more money in this car. I will prob paint the 1991 first. I plan on keeping both

Re: 1992 B4C Project

Started in on the Camaro today. Right front ball joint was better than I expected it to be. A local shop scored a spare set of A-arms for me, and I had new MOOG ball-joints and suspension energy poly bushings pressed in. Shawn included a set of inner and outer tie rods with the good adjusters, and I picked up a new center link and idler arm too.

Today I got the right side mostly done, did the A-arm and got the new Tokico blue strut in with new 1LE rotors and the Bosch Ceramic pads that Shawn had on it. My wife and I went out last night, so I was working slow today! I need some caliper paint to clean up the brakes, do the left side, do the steering stuff, and then do the rear brakes and shocks.

I'm going to toss the ZR1's on that a friend was selling too, and then a few things to get it safety checked and ready for SCCA in November. It should be a capable handler, but I still have not found the wrench for the nut behind the wheel...

Re: 1992 B4C Project

Got the front end all back together, it looks good. Took a little test drive and everything seems tight! I let my buddy here have my 1991 B4C for a set of ZR1 rims plus $300. It was a solid car, but needs going through, and one third gen is enough for me. I really wanted the 1LE car, so sticking with the 1992. I ordered spacers off E-bay for the rims, they got here this week. I am picking up new tires on Monday, and then get an alignment. Still need to do the rear shocks and brakes. The speedo is inop, so prob need a new sender, and then a rearview mirror and it should pass safety and be legal!

zr1 rims post some pics once you toss them on, i myself am thinking of zr1's on my 91 b4c. i threw on my c6's from my 88 just to see how it looks, looks good im just unsure how street friendly and cost effective burning out on 19" rear tires will be, i'l post some pics of it with the c6's once i finish the rear suspension upgrades later this week

Re: 1992 B4C Project

Got the rear all taken care of today. Crazy Hawaiian had said he thought the bushings were going out on the LCA's, he was hearing a clunk. I checked it out and the panhard bolts and swaybar bolts were real loose! Tightened those up and it seems better. I can pass safety with these rear tires, but don't want to SCCA on them. I need to go get a speed sensor and a rearview mirror, then I will try and pass safety on Wednesday and get it legal. Then if I can throw on the tires and get an alignment (I just did the driveway string trick for now!), I should be set for Sunday. If nothing else, the car looks faster!

looking good, im leaning towards those zr1's myself, do you plan on doign a drop if so how mcuh an inch or so would look good, also do you plan on keeping the B4C stock, im thinkign of that myself, so far all the parts i've swapped i've kepted (rims, water resevoir, wiper resevoir, ac,lcas, pandhard bar) in case i ever need to go back to all stock again, how important is that to you

Re: 1992 B4C Project

I am building this up for a SCCA project. I have the stock pieces too, so far nothing has been replaced that'd be hard to un-do. I'd like to do sub-frames, but once they are welded in that's it. I also have an Eibach pro-kit for it. In Hawaii, if you lower a vehicle it needs a seperate inspection, so I am debating if I want to do that or not.

Ran into a glitch today, I replaced the VSS and still no speedo/odo. I spun the shaft with a drill and the speedo still does not move. Connector to the VSS is Ok with a multimeter. So I ordered an OBD-I cable to scan it and see if the ECU is seeing a speedo pulse or not. I can't get it passed for safety with the speedo in-op.

Yeah, I know some people that have parts cars . I ordered a OBD-I cable, and if the ECU is reading a speed signal then I will take it apart and swap the dash with a 110MPH for now. I'll then have to send the 145 in for repair. Those are hard to find Stinks being in Hawaii, mail takes longer to get here!

Ok, got the scanner setup today, and the ECU is reading speed signal, so the cluster is bad. Which sucks since 145 MPH speedos are not easy to find. I guess I could but a regular one in for now and send this one off for repair, but I'll check prices and see what I find.

Sent the cluster off to a shop in LA, they charged $195 plus $30 shipping to fix it. I almost popped a 110 in for now, but no big hurry, so I'll do it right. Hope to get it back next week and get it on the road!

Re: 1992 B4C Project

Got the speedo back, at first I thought it did not work. Drove it down the street, and nothing. But once it got up to speed I could see it move up. So I pulled the needle off, re zeroed it, and it's all good.

So started checking the safety stuff. Remember this car had pretty much not ben touched since being auctioned! Horn was inop. Took off the airbag, and conector was broken. I had an extra GN column, so took it apart to pull the connector plate. Still dead. SO I started trouble shooting, power to realy, just nothing to the buttons. Then WHAM! I remebered, I am a medic, and on the ambulances, the horn toggles the yelp/wail when the siren is on. Sure enough I found a cut wire at the base of the column, spliced into a harness. Tested it hot with key off, so put it together and it worked! The washer motor was rusted and shot, so got one of those in it too!

So now it is legal! I did not make SCCA sunday, have some more to do, but I got it regged and on the road Saturday.

Charged the A/C, so far it's cold! (I live in Hawaii, we use it year round!)

I ordered a set of BMR SFC's, and a wonderbar (old one is gone), get some new tires for the rear, and it should be good! Body work is next!

On a side note, this car has D27, locking rear compartment. Anyone know if this is common on the B4C cars? My 1991 did not have it.

Re: 1992 B4C Project

I did some more owrk on the car, the sway bar bushing were trashed. I installed new poly bushings, SFC's, wonderbar, and strut tower brace from BMR. I also put on a set of new Federal 595 tires. SUnday was the first SCCA day of the season. I was a little slow, but the car did great. My two friends who race ran the car, and got MUCH better tires out of it!

Here is their results:
http://rides.webshots.com/video/3059...96893055cZDFuy

and my attempts!:
http://rides.webshots.com/video/3035...96893055poovFp

I am going to run it next month, and then we have a 3 month break, and I hope to get the body work done in that time.

It was nice seening the old girl out and pushing it to the limit :-) the 1LE brakes are AMAZING compared to regular ones!

Nothing but crickets? LOL! Car has a few more bugs I will work on this weekend, the passenger power window is shot, and the wiper delay relay is not working right. I am looking forward to starting the paint after my next SCCA event!

Wow, time flies...still have the 1992. It has been a loaner car for people needing a ride, and the roof really went to crap. I finally decided to respray the car and get it looking 100% again. Now I am moving to Tennessee, and the car is going with me.

Re: 1992 B4C Project

All the rust was cut out, and a new panel was fabricated and welded in. Bondo of course to shape it. Light bar wiring holes and an antenna hole was also welded up and smoothed. I sanded off the sunburnt paint, and prepped it for 2K high build. It was blocked with 400 grit, and tomorrow will be the base coat/clear.

Re: 1992 B4C Project

I have to update LOL, the GN and 1991 are sold. I have a low 11 sec LS1 car in storage in VA along with my truck and tools, have been sitting almost 7 years now Right now I am bringing back the B4C, my wife's 2010 Mustang GT, and a P71 Crown Vic project I have been working on. Sorry about the blue ovals, I have varied tastes

Re: 1992 B4C Project

OK, car is back together...not 100% perfect, I have plans to improve some areas in the future, but the intent was a solid and clean driver, not a perfect show car. This was an inservice patrol car after all, while mostly decent, it had a hard life! On top of that, me and my buddy are not professional body men, we repaired the roof and painted it for about $400 total. The local body shop wanted $6K, and I have seen their work...I am not convinced it'd be any better than this!

- New door weather strip was installed
- New nose emblem and RS logos
- New door handles (springs were shot and rattled)
- Car still needs windshield trim
- The grill crumbled and fell apart when I went to clean it, will need a new one.
- Needs a new nose and spoiler in the future
- Carpet needs replaced and seats recovered, and it should be pretty solid

Dec 28th it is being picked up to ship to Nashville, and progress will resume once I get settled in there

Re: 1992 B4C Project

Thanks guys, I took a job with Hospital Corp Of America (HCA), the office is in Brentwood. I'll start off renting, looking somewhere in Franklin/Brentwood area, and go from there. My LS1 car has been sitting in storage in VA the six years I have been in Hawaii, so looking forward to getting that one on the road too!

Car looks beautiful!

This is a long shot but you wouldnt happen to have an old set of 1le rotors for the front laying around would you? im trying to make hubs for my 5th gen brake upgrade but dont want to spend $150 on a pair of brand new rotors just to cut into hubs.

Sorry Jersey! I did the brakes when I first got the car years ago, and they are long gone. I may pickup a set of cross drilled and slotted in the near future though.

Hey man, I am a new 1991 B4C owner, I just got a black FBI 1991 b4c...... looks just like yours minus the SS wheels. Do you show yours at all? Also, I am in the same line of work as you and I have met with your company a few times. Message me sometime!

Re: 1992 B4C Project

Welcome buddy, I saw that one on Craig's list. Looks like a good deal! I was going to go look at it, but was gone by the time I got off work. Glad you found TGO. You'll have to post up your options. I am in Franklin now, have not got the B4C all done yet, the heater is still disconnected, etc. Hope to have it on the road soon.

Re: 1992 B4C Project

I was able to get the PO to hold it until yesterday so I could come back and pick it up...it was an hour and a half drive both ways so I wanted to come back and get it over the weekend. That being said, I haven't even got it out of the enclosed trailer yet. I will post some pics of it tomorrow and I am going to grab a pic of the options sheet to decode it and find out what options it has. I have been doing some searching on here and it turns out, one of the other PO posted about it on here in 2008/2009 so it has actually been on here before. It is a very nice car for the price, even if it wasn't a B4C FBI car. I plan to get it back looking really nice again and show it at the Friday night Hendersonville show.

Re: 1992 B4C Project

The Friday Hendersonville show is at the streets of indian lake every friday night from 6ish until around 10. usually over 200 cars there every friday night. its mostly muscle cars...and very little of the new stuff. You would enjoy it, its a good place to hang out. PM me if you wanna try it out and I will make sure I am there.

Good luck with the sale. If I had the funds I would buy that car.

Did you notice a real big difference in the stiffness of the front end after you up on the at BMR strut tower brace?
