Car: 1992 camaro rs
Engine: 3.1 v6 MFI
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: poss rear end
my vin is rusty looking can i clean it with a wire brush
i have a 92 camaro rs 3.1 v6 5 speed poss rearend. when i got the car it had no windshield. i have had the car 2 years now and got the car running great. my vin tag is rusty looking but you can read the tag. my question is can i wire brush it and repaint it/ or is that a no no.. i know not to remove it. there is no reason to. dont want to mess anything up..

put some por15 on it, mine is rusty too almost rusted in half

ok, but is it against the law to do wire brush it and paint? the tag is sturdy . i was wanting to clean and paint it as long as i dont get in trouble. read alot about not removing it.but nothing on cleaning & painting it . can anyone give me a good answer..

You can't tamper with it or alter it in any way. That includes cleaning it and/or painting it.

well here in tn as long as the VIN tag on the dash is redily readible you can paint it any color you wish,HOWEVER you must check your states particular laws for peace of mind!!

If it is just a surface rust you can probably remove it with just some metal polish. I have had really good luck using a turtle wax product that sells for about $3 bucks at autozone. Worked great at removing surface rust from chrome wheels and metal surfaces without any damage to the metal. Give it a try it could not hurt.

Also, if the polish does not do the trick then try a little steel wool. It will not leave deep metal scratchs like a wire brush would.
