Who do you insure your third gen with?

Hopefully picking up a 88' Iroc at the end of the week and called my insurance today to get a quote. Wasn't thrilled with what they told me so thought I 'd ask some others who they used/what they pay for insurance on their third gens. I plan on full coverage and asked them if they would pay out more than book value. They said they pay cash value for it, so I would get screwed if it got totaled out. With the coverages that I have currently (250,000/500,000) and deductible of $250 they told me $206 per 6 months. I find this a little much since my 2003 WRX that would easily outrun the IROC cost me about the same to insure. A quick check with Hagerty's came back with $339 for the year, with the car valued at 10K and me driving 5K miles a year.

American Collector Insurance.

They insured for an agreed upon value.

That could be because your car doesn't apply for Classic status yet(25 YRS.),or you are going to use the car as a DD.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Currently my '86 is insured with Farmer's, everything I own is under their umbrella. But that will change very soon to a collector car insurer because Farmer's does not normally insure cars like my Camaro of that age and calibre, so to speak. At least that is what my agent told me.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Through Progressive I pay about $350/yr for full coverage w/ $500 deductibles on my 88 Iroc. If I had anti-lock brakes and air bags I could have better rate. I switched from Geico because it would have cost me $1200/yr with them for the same coverage.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Grundy is the other one I was going to check. Yah Hagertys is way better than putting it with everything else I have at safeco. At least there I can name my own value and be insured for that, as opposed to book value, which isn't much. I remember the days of paying $200 per month for car insurance. Wow that seems like such a long time ago, even though it was maybe 10-12 yrs ago. Being over 25, owning a home and have multiple things insured sure does help.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I don't know what else you own, but check with your current carrier about a 'multi-policy discount'. When I bought my Camaro, it was my third currently registered car. I went to Liberty Mutual, from Arbella, and because I gave them 3 cars along with my house policy, the total cost was 65 dollars less a year than what I was paying at Arbella and that included the Camaro, essentially making it 'free' to insure!

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

You guys pay a lot for insurance!!!I pay $169.51 a year for the TA,But I could only insure it for an agreed amount of $6,000.00,If I want a higher agreed amount,I would have to get it appraised, witch doesn't make sense because the appraiser will appraise it for what ever you want him to appraise it for.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I have my 82 and my 86 with Hagerty. Better deal and agreed value as compared to State Farm, which does not do agreed value. We continue to to use State Farm for our four DD's, the race car trailer, and our dump trailer, as it is a good company for DD insurance. Grundy is good also. I think that Grundy and Hagerty are similiar. Of course, I have not had a ticket of any kind since 1977, and get the old fart discount, so we have great rates on everything. We even removed our two power boats from SF and put them with BoatingUS, which offers speciality coverage for that hobby. I believe that anytime one has any sort of vehicle that is not the run-of-the-mill DD you are better off with speciality coverage. Back in the old days we did not have that option. Hagerty and Grundy want verification that you have a dependable late model DD.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I have everything though Nationwide. The TA is about $396 a year full coverage if I leave full coverage on all year. I have 100/300 on all the Jeep, TA and bike. I have $0.00 deduct on comp, $250.00 deduct on rest, towing and I think agreed value of $8,000. I'm also almost 35, have muti car discount and a few others and a clean driving record right now.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I have Grundy and pay $168/year with full coverage for $20k. I think they do restrict that the car can't be driven to work unless it's going for repairs or to a cruise/car show after work. The good thing about Grundy is that they don't restrict annual mileage.

I saw they changed their policy about driving to work... not an every day ting, but if it's a Friday or something, yes...

Also, year of car matters... mine is 91... and I live in Florida...

Not that your racking up the miles or anything LOL! I think I need to make a phone call and get both of mine on Grundy. I did see that it is a state value policy and not an "agreed/appraised" value correct?

I switched mine to Hagerty earlier this year from American Collectors. I'd been with AC for years but they kept switching underwriters over the past few years and this last time the switch included doubling my premium which was it for me.

I will have to give Grundy a call, for $1 less I could get $14,000 more on a agreed value
Scott, did you have to have an appraiser??

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I jumped on board with Grundy when I bought the car 12.5 years ago. They used to have a policy that once a car hits 25 years of age, the cost per thousand dollars of coverage drops in half. My policy renews in November and my car turned 25 in January so I had to pay the full premium last year, ~$270 for $19k, and this year it dropped because I was grandfathered in to the old policy. I won't complain about paying $168 for $20k of coverage.

I did not have to provide an appraisal, but remember that when I bought my car 12.5 years ago, there was only 6k miles on it. I had to provide them pictures only. They have increased my coverage annually from the original $14k to $20k today. I was actually contacted a few years ago after the auction season when a low mile IROC-Z was sold. Grundy determined that the sale of that car, increased my car's value so they asked if I wanted to insure it for more based on market values.

One thing I noticed about many collector insurance companies is that they restrict mileage annually. I believe Hagerty does this. I would not have been able to do the Hot Rod Power Tour last year if I had them because I put 3500 miles on the car in 2011. If your car isn't 25 years old, you might not get as good a rate as I get. Plus, I'm grandfathered into a policy that they might not have any longer. All you can do is check into it.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

STATED VALUE is a term that means if you have a total loss, the insurance company will use source such as Kelly Blue Book to establish the current value of your car. Kelly BB is the one dealers use as a tool to validate the LOW BALL offer when establishing trade-in values with customers. Stated Value is a legal ease term that means you are screwed.
AGREED VALUE means that they agree that the value of your car is agreed between the insurance company and you.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I pay $10 a month through Geico (perfect record, military) for $100 deductibles in both collision and comprehensive for my 84 Z28 and $11 for my Harley with $250 deductibles.

Agreed value isn't a concern for me right now since all the work has been to the motor/transmission. Geico does do agreed value, however.

An Edit: I had a 2002 Camaro v6 when I was in high school and college and I believe I paid $1200 a month through my parent's State Farm policy. It's amazing what happens when you hit 25 years and have a good driving record.

I have my Nova insured with Hagerty for $15k (if it gets totalled or stolen that's what they pay me), and it's $445 a year. Hagerty is an excellent company.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Sounds like Hagerty is a great company at taking money! The $445 you pay for $15k coverage is almost 3x what Grundy is charging me for $5k more. Even if my car wasn't 25 years old, it was still only $270 or so for $19k in coverage. That's full coverage, full glass coverage, towing and travel reimbursement if the car breaks down while driving it away from home, with unlimited mileage!!!

Scott, I compared Hagarty to Grundy and they were the same rate for me. I think it has more to to with the driver's age, driving record, location where the car is driven, how it is stored, accident rates on different models, and other factors that affect rates.

I have both the 82WS7 and the 86WS6 insured with Hagarty. Zero deductable, 12,500 agreed value, towing, rental car, and the highest liability limits available in our state for $320.00 a year, or $160.00 a year for each car.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Charles, that sounds much better than the $445 mentioned above. I guess I just assumed all things being equal, but didn't take into account a person's accident record, driving record, etc into my response. I think Grundy and Hagerty have a minimum age to even get insured so I'm not sure age is an issue, but the other areas definitely are.

I use grundy for my 2 Irocs.Pay 260 dollars a year which covers both cars.Current agreed value is 6500 for the 86 and 11,500 for the 89 vert.I did notice that grundy increases the agreed value 500 dollars per year and your premium also reflects the increase.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I have hagarty for my 88 iroc. No mileage restrictions...agreed upon value of 15k. Must be garaged and not used as commuter to work. All that for around 350 for the year is good for me. Im 26 and the primary driver of it (aka only driver of it), but the car is still registered in my mothers name since it was a 200 dollar savings a year to do it that way. Age plays a BIG role in how expensive the insurance is. I have ZERO accidents or speeding tickets on my record and my insurance would still be very high were i to switch the title to my name on the camaro.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

AAA also has great colledtors coverage. I use them for my older cars

69 firebird 400, 30K agreeed value
69 firebird 400, 25K agreeed value
79 Trans Am, 20K agreeed value
85 Trans Am, 15K agreeed value

I pay 450 yr for all four cars, 5K miles per year, and my kids can drive and be covered. The other insurance did not allow this, and we were taking multi cars to shows the past few years.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I use Grundy. Have 4 collector cars with them. I like the agreed value, multiple drivers and no mileage restrictions. Nice to know you can take your car out anytime. Although I have been tempted on a nice winter day to take one out-never have.

I use Grundy as well...IROC is insured for $17,000, Z28 is insured for $11,000, and I just paid the total annual policy of $382 combined for both cars.

I am not complaining.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Geico. I tried Haggerty but they wouldn't insure me because my mother (my mom and dad share a car) doesn't have a car and my sister made a claim (her car got broken into). The example they gave me about my mom not having a car was lets say my mom was home and everyone else in my house was working. My mother get a phone and needs to leave bc of an emergency she can say, I take my sons camaro. I will be moving in about a year so I will try haggerty again.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

My wife and I have nationwide, we have to carry full coverage on the cobalt until it is payed off(hopefully this tax season) which is a hefty $250 a month after discounts(sucks being under 25 years old), good part was, my 89' got full coverage on top of lowering the monthly cost, it's got multi car + leisure vehicle because it doesn't see the road to often(been under a 2-3 year reconstruction)

Did I mention is sucks being under 25 years old

Plus, I'm grandfathered into a policy that they might not have any longer. All you can do is check into it.

Age plays a BIG role in how expensive the insurance is. I have ZERO accidents or speeding tickets on my record and my insurance would still be very high were i to switch the title to my name on the camaro.
I got Hagarty Ins. for my 86 back in 2005. I had plenty of pics of the motor getting cleaned and painted, cleaning the interior with seats removed and the process of the car getting painted. There's no mileage restrictions. Must be stored in a garage. 10K for just under $220 a year. One thing that gets me is that my address has me located in a metropolitan where the crime rates are high in the downtown area but I'm actually out in the burbs. The cities boarders go out between two smaller cities and then spreads out in an area that's like being in the country.

I have found out that I do not have unlimited towing either. Just the first 10 miles are covered and then it's reduced rate.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Both my 82 and 89 are with State Farm. The 82 (KITT car) is on the antique auto policy insured for 17,000.00. The 89 is liability with comprehensive and then I have the little beater cavalier on bottom of the barrel liability. My payment is 84.00/month for all 3. I could probably get a better deal, but I'm tired of switching insurance companies. I've tried 9 different ones over the years.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I have an agreed value policy through State Farm. However due to extremely poor customer service on a claim recently I am leaving them after 16 years of loyal payments.

Progressive offers Agreed Value policies, but I don't know what their mileage limits or anything else is like. My phone died while I was on the phone with the rep and I never called back.

State Farm currently insures my car for $9000. Which means, if the car is listed as a total loss, then I receive a $9,000 check. And yes, it is Agreed Value, the value is listed right on my insurance card.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Mine is also with State Farm. I have an agreement to keep it in a garage locked up and drive it less than 7000 miles/year. Currently I'm paying <$140 a year for coverage on it, but it's knocked down to basically just storage coverage now. It went in for a K member swap Fall of '11 then we had our first child so the entire project got put on hold. When I do drive it I have full coverage, towing, and car rental coverage and fee is higher of course.

Maybe once it's mobile again I should look into seeing what value of coverage is on it. I'm going to be a little upset if something happens and I don't even get enough to cover the motor build.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Grundy Update....
I live in Florida, which is in the top 5 of highest car insurance places (lucky me)...

Anywho, my Grundy is due in a couple of months, so they sent me a warning shot, $417 for $30k of coverage on my 91 Firebird...

Last year I spoke to someone at Grundy and they stated after the car is 25 years old, price drops... I mentioned this and after running the numbers...

$258 for $30k agreed upon value & living in Florida!!!

Staying with Grundy for now

My car is still with Grundy in Florida, and with a $30k policy, I'm about $230.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I created a whole table of costs Vs. benefits across the different suppliers.

For me, my record, car, and market, it came down to Grundy or Condon-Skelly.

I was going to go with Grundy, as they seemed the more well known company. But every time I called them, I was on hold forever. Like 30-45 minutes forever.

When they finally put paperwork in front of me to sign, it was incorrect.

When I called to have new paperwork sent, they had the nerve to tell me that their paperwork was right, and I was wrong...I did NOT own an '88 T/A, but a '70s something Chevy pickup.

Once I helped them figure out THEIR error, I decided that this was NOT a company I needed to be doing business with. If they were this hard to deal with when I was trying to GIVE them money, or couldn't imagine dealing with them when I needed money back (claim).

My purchase and renewal with Condon-Skelly has been trouble-free.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

Between me, my dad, uncles, and friends I know all 15 of us or so around here have cars with Grundy. You can not beat their prices it is very reasonable. I pay maybe around $170yr for 10k on mine. Gosh I remember being fresh out of high school with a Z28 paying like $1600yr to some big name insurance co, of course it wasn't a classic then though.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I use Heacock classic. I am not sure what it cost for my iroc at 15k agreed value. I have 7 or 8 cars insured through them and it is under 700 a year. 2 cudas, duster, camaro, monte aerocoupe, vega, amx. Values from 30k plus to 7500. I am 28 never had a ticket or accident. Have to be non daily and in garage of course.

Re: Who do you insure your third gen with?

I have my 89 Formula insured with State Farm for $15,000 and I pay $150 per year. It is listed as antique / classic. I also have my 69 Buick Skylark insured for $15,000 and pay $150 per year. Is the big difference in premiums for some guys due to driving record and classic vs daily driver or are the problems with coverages?

I did an agreed upon value of 10K on mine with Hagerty last year. Renewal time is in just a couple of weeks. Heck, Im going back with them just to keep those classic car magazines coming in the mail!...LOL
