I have I hope is a valid question on newer engines 5.0 and 5.7 I have seen both silver and black in colors I am sure there is some rhyme and reason for this on oem engines thanks for sharing

Re: valve cover color on center bolted covers
Ran out of silver ones in 92 and since the end of production was nearing, black truck covers were an easy substitute.

Re: valve cover color on center bolted covers
Werd. Happened about the same time (June '92?) they ran out of non-textured TPI runners and they started using the Corvette TPI runners. At least I've never seen black valve covers without the Vette runners on a car that was original.
Earlier on, like in December of '91, they also ran out of throttle body plates that said Tunned Port Injection and they started using blank LT1 plates. Also, on Firebirds anyway, they ran out of grey leather shift handles (automatic) and used plain grey plastic ones in full leather option Firebirds around the same time as the TB plates.
My 92 GTA has the blank TB plate and non leather shift handle but was too early for the Vette runners and black valve covers.

Re: valve cover color on center bolted covers
Always found Black valve covers on TBI/Carb and Silver valve covers on all TPI's from 87-92. Can't be absolutly sure that's true on ALL Thirdgens but that's my experience - with more than just a couple of cars.......
PS.. LT1 Valve covers returned to black.

Re: valve cover color on center bolted covers
i was guessing the tpi got silver to match the tpi, and the tbi got black to match the big nasty round breather ... not sure though
