ac delete for 1987
I know the 88 models were the first year for the 1LE package. But Could you order a firebird without a/c? I have deleted mine and when I removed the compressor I went to the GM dealer and had him look up to see if there was a belt dimension listed for my 1987 Trans Am without AC and there was which leads me to believe it could be ordered without it. IF so do they make a bracket that does not have the part sticking up where the compressor would have been that the power steering pump attaches to?

Re: ac delete for 1987
87 year models did not have a serpentine belt system if that is the pulley you are refering to. Ill take a picture of what im trying to eliminate and post so it will be easier to explain.

I think I know what your talking about. If you mean the bracket that bolts to the head that the ps pump bolts to, use a washer the thickness of the bracket to keep the angle on the pump correct. On the exhaust mount use a stud and place extra bolts on it to compensate for the missing bracket. You will be able to remove your a/c and make it look like it was never there.

Re: ac delete for 1987
The 87 the AC was on the drivers side, so really to delete it all you had to do was remove it and the brackets, no biggie.
According to the Order worksheet You could technically order a bare bones Firebird, Formula, Trans Am, or GTA without A/C. However A/C was included in all option packages....
If you ordered everything individually, then it appears that you could have done it.
The following were options for all models
C60, A/C
UA1 HD Battery
NB2 Calif emissions
D42 CArgo Screen
C49 - Rear Defog
CC1 - T-tops
VK3 - Licesnse Plate Bracket
B34 - Floor Mats
U75 - Pow Ant
WS8 - Price order acknoledgement
UM6, UM7, UX1, UT4 - Radios
UQ7 - Subwoofer (stereo radios only)
UL5 - Radio Delete
MM5 - 5 speed
MX0 - Auto
D60 - Color trim override
ZV1 - MFG statement of Origin
VC8 - Substitution or Delete Authorization (COPO)
However It appears that if you wanted power windows... then you would have to order the W61 or W63 packages...
So it could have been done as far as the order sheet... I suppose it would have been interesting to buy a GTA 350, no options..Just the performance goodies...

Re: ac delete for 1987
According to Frankie from GTASourcepage and what my order sheet shows for 1987, the following is all that a GTA would have unless you ordered a package or individual options:
AQ9 Seats W/Custom Trim - GTA Exterior Ornamentation - DD9 Mirrors (originally) - NP5 Leather Appointment Group - B2L 5.7L V8 - PW7 16" Rims - QDZ 16" tires - WS6 Special Performance Package - KC4 Engine Oil Cooler - J65 4-Wheel Disc Brakes (on all 5.7L and all 5.0L/5-speed cars) - G80 Limited Slip Axle - B34 Front and Rear Mats
That's a base 1987 GTA. That is how some 1987 GTAs came out without power windows, locks, etc., but you don't seem to see such a base 1987 GTA often?
I've never seen an order sheet from Canada or really anything Canada used. Would be interesting.

My 87 T/A had NO a/c !
It did have almost every other option tho...................
Several Caddy dealers either wouldn't take it in trade in 89 on a new DeVille
or lowballed on the trade!

Re: ac delete for 1987
Anything south of Canada, it is not something that most people really want.
Today, looking back it would be a novelty, and besides, most of our A/C systems stopped working years ago. It was a crappy system then, and it still is a crappy system, the only reason why new systems are so much better is they went backwards on the pumps The new pumps are basically the same type of design (albeit smaller) as the A/C compressor on my 67 Riviera. The Radial type pump that they used thru the 1980's was crap, the seals blow out, the crankshafts break, etc...

Re: ac delete for 1987
I would like to see a picture of the bracket removal on the a/c. I took another look at it last night and the adjustment for the tension on the power steering pulley is tied into this bracket. I know it was said to add washers to shim up but Im going to need to see a picture of this done to see how and still keep tension on the power steering belt.

Hey Frankie I think the same car is now on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Fire...-/171522211676
What's also interesting is that it appears to have no tilt column and I have seen a few 1987 GTAs like that when they don't have other options. Some people can say they didn't like the power windows for something to fail with the motors and electrics, but as to why no tilt is more odd.

Re: ac delete for 1987
Yes, 1987 'birds could be ordered without AC. So yes, there is a bracket for non-AC cars, just for mounting the PS pump. I wanted to order my car without AC, but dad had a fit about me doing that, so I didn't. If I had it to do over again...
But since I can't do it over again, I purchased one of the brackets(not yet installed) from a dealer several years ago to eventually do a clean AC delete. I'd take a pic for you, except it's not currently at hand. Maybe tomorrow, if I can find it, and if nobody beats me to it.

Ok, here are the pics I promised. As you can see, it's relatively small, for mounting just the PS pump. And as you've already confirmed, there is a belt of the appropriate size available for non-AC cars.

Here's how I did my a/c delete on my v belt car. The head has washers the thickness of the bracket and I utilized a manifold stud to mount the ps bracket. It's not factory but it's not a messy install

Re: ac delete for 1987
Sorry, no, it's not for sale.
I realize non-AC cars were not plentiful, but it's not unusual for one to show-up at a junkyard from time-to-time. And I'd think this bracket was used on any non-AC 3rdgen V8 from 1982-1987, so it might not be too difficult to find one out there somewhere, maybe even from a vendor who deals in used parts, such as Thirdgen Ranch or Hawk's.

Re: ac delete for 1987
Remember that the V8 was used in more than just the F-body... I would think that anything without A/C in 1986-1987 would use the same bracket...
Also IIRC one of my pulleys has a dual pulley IIRC... do non A/C cars have a different pulley for that component? I think it was the power steering pump, but that does not seem right...

Non-AC PS pump is single groove. With AC makes it double. All others stay the same: crank has 3, water pump 2, smog 1, alt 1.
83 L69 used for reference.

That bracket is still available through Vintage Parts (VPI). GM part no. 14101199. I just ordered one last week for a future project. They have 5 available.
