Firebird speedo - what year used the 140 MPH with no kmh ?

All Speedo’s I’ve seen always have MPH as dominant and KMH smaller on the face (Export like Canada the other way around).

however years ago I got hold of a loose set of gauges (don’t know the year) and the speedo only have MPH on there and needles on all of the gauges are clear (so not orange back on them but this could have been scraped/sanded off I’m not sure)

anyway as far as I can remember this is the only one I ever seen with just MPH on there and it’s definitely not been modified and is the real deal.

anyone got this style in their bird or have knowledge of the years/models using them?

Photos of both styles

That’s kinda neat, don’t think I’ve seen that before. I do see a “B” on one and “G” on the other, surely that has something to do with it. There some community in the world somewhere that absolutely refused to acknowledge the metric system in the 80’s, but loved Firebird’s?

I remember some talk about this before (on here?) but I can't remember exactly where i saw it. I'm thinking it was a 85 thing?

They can be found on many 1986. Here's an example on eBay:

The 140 Speedo without the Km is an early 1986 thing... I have a friend with that exact setup. Mid way thru 1986, they added the KM.

Interesting. I don't think I recall ever seeing those.

It's funny...as much as I hate change, I'm certain that I must have hated the introduction of metric measurements on my gauges back when. Now I've looked at them WITH metric measurements so long, it looks strange to me without them.

That is neat, I like the cleaner look with just MPH on there ... hmmm might use it in my 89 TTA as I'm just doing the odometer gear repair on a spare one I have to swap into the car ...

thanks for the insight, much appreciated !

What bothered me even more was the departure from english words on the dashboards to universal symbols. Must have started the 1990's, but by the early 2000's it was all symbols. Had to study hieroglyphics to decode what the heck was going on. Had a brand new 2003 Silverado & the first time putting on the cruise control it had an green arrow pointing at what was suppose to be a speedometer. What the......... I remember seeing it come on & thinking, Really?? can't have one word light up on this dash?

Now we are all used to it & I don't think twice.
