I am going to have the tonneau cover on my car repainted. Do I find a clear sticker like the one that is on there from the factory? Or will it be ok if I just leave the clear sticker off the lid so that I don't have to worry about it yellowing again. Will the paint hold up to the top coming down and resting on it? I imagine that the sticker provided good protection, but I have also had another camaro convertible that did not have the sticker and it seemed okay.

when I repainted my car, I bought a new one from a dealer wholesaler. I think it just looks cleaner. I did leave off the 2 little ones just behind the door with no problems of scratching yet (3 yrs)

Any of you guys have that part number, or where you got it? My local dealer has no friggin idea what im talkin abuot when I tell them what I want, it doesent even show on the diagram.

The only thing is that piece of plastic begins to lift off a little bit over time then it looks like the paint is scratched (with a white car it might not matter though). I think it might be better to leave it off.

Well, under the sticker that is on there now, it is majorly yellowed. I wandered if it would cause noticable damage to just leave it off. Maybe my best bet will be to buy some thing generic and cut it to fit. For my little brother's skis he bought a protective thick clear sticker which was pretty long. I could probably do something with that. Or a white vinyl one maybe.

My opinion is this... the clear layer was part of the conversion and would be necessary for the car to be considered accurate in a car show. Judging from the surface wear on the decal on my convertible, I'd rather have it there then digging into paint. Also keep in mind that aftermarket paint jobs aren't as durable as OEM paint. If ASC and GM felt there should be a guard there, then who are we to argue?

I agree that it should be on there, but where can I get one? Or should I just have one made at a sticker shop?

Well, if I were searching for one or a substitute, I'd start at a dealership parts counter, if not parts counters at every GM dealer in town. If it couldn't be located I'd look for convertible parts suppliers, then if I still hadn't found one I'd go to local sticker/sign shops and see if they could cut a piece of adhesive backed clear vinyl in the right size/shape.

Forget about the dealer... They dont have it on their diagrams. I even took them out to my car, and theyve never seen it before. A part number would rule...

My policy when dealing with somethign like this is to try all options and not to limit myself based on second hand info. Not saying that you're incorrect, only that my parts staff might have an older catalog under the counter or something like that so it could be verified... Besides I usually have 10-15 parts to ask about everytime I go to the dealer, so its not like i"d be wasting much time.

Gentlemen, try this. My copy of the Sept 1991 GM F-car catalog calls it a protector. P/N 12390939 and describes it as a folding top stow compt lid (clear). It had a list price of $87.00. I hope this helps!

Got a part number from someone here and it has been changed. New number is 12520107 and price is 145.30 . That is too much for me. I will have one made somewhere
