JUst Checking in and seeing if there has been any sign of a Pontiac UX1 Radio. All I can Find are Chevy. is there a way to switch the LED and lights? and what do you have currently available for a pontiac.
Still haven't come across an 84 Pontiac specific style yet Sarge, ( with RED back-lighting ) but I do have the 85-87 style UX1 that uses the same "large" plug style as the 84. As a matter of fact I just finished building one of them last weekend. Here is the one I just finished,....
I don't add LEDs so I'm not stocked with the LEDs; All I use is standard type bulbs ( GM about 90% of the time ) so to install LEDs I'd need to acquire the LEDs first. A non-EQ radio uses 1 soldered bulb and 2 push-type,.... and radios with the Blaupunkt cassette deck ( UX1/BOSE) use 3 push - type and 1 soldered bulb. The soldered bulb is an 8-11$ bulb (BP330: 14V 80ma ), but the other 3 are pretty reasonable. ( IIRC is #74?) Installing LEDs would require some patience; I'd have to do some homework to figure out what LEDs would be appropriate, then buy some, wait for delivery, install and test, then check for operation and take / upload /Link to pics for review. LEDs are pretty bright, not sure how that would look against the rest of the interior if everything else was stock.
Most of my head units are rebuilt to stock,... but a few of them already have an AUX installed. If your interested in an AUX jack,.... LMK. I've got about 8-10 various Pontiac radios from the 85-94 vintage + a few 4th Gen Trans Am head units; Probably have most of the various radios that were installed into Pontiacs during those years so if there is specific head unit your interested in ( Other than that 84' UX1 I can't get my hands on ! ) Just LMK.
1986 (only) Berlinetta UT4,... has hidden AUX jack in the neck, all lights working cassette deck is functional, a few minor cosmetic defects but in real good overall condition:

Just got through reading this thread, the whole time hoping I'd see some good news regarding a stock Firebird unit towards the end. And from this picture, it looks like I might be in luck. I've got an 87 Trans Am GTA that a previous owner replaced the stock stereo with an aftermarket unit. I'm in the process of getting as many things back to factory working condition as possible. Please let me how much this one would be and if it's possible to include the factory harness. The P.O. cut most of the wires so I'm hoping to splice back into the factory harness.
I offered the Pontiac UX1 radio in that pic to SgtJackson after his request here. We send a few messages back and forth and the last contact was a message I sent to him with all the details needed to complete the transaction. That message was on the 8th - 9 days ago - and I ALWAYS hold parts on reserve and allow 10 days for a payment to reach me before I will offer a part to anyone else. I will not just 'sell a part out from under' someone, but I will not hold parts on reserve forever either. - (Wes; if your seeing this, send me a PM ASAP if your seriously interested - JUST 1 DAY LEFT !! .) I offered that head unit at a pretty good price and will extend the same asking price to you Richard if SrgJackson doesn't make contact tomorrow.
FYI: I do have at least 1 more of these head units too. However; a different UX1 might be priced higher or lower due to better/lesser quality or a greater/lesser amount of repair/restoration work. The radio you see in this thread has had the display & display board replaced, the light bulbs replaced and a replacement cassette deck was installed I consider it to be "rebuilt" even though it still using it's the original AMP capacitors. I do not know the specifics of any other UX1's right now - so I would need to investigate a bit before I have specific details to share.
A quick question for you Richard; are you interested in an AUX jack modification ??
Thanks for all the info, John! I would be interested in an auxiliary mod, preferably a behind the unit dongle. My ultimate goal is to actually hook up a 12v Bluetooth adaptor that would plug into the 3.5mm auxiliary jack and have all of that tucked away to maintain a factory appearance with Bluetooth connectivity. I'm curious what your thoughts are on that.
I'd also need the factory connectors if possible since the previous owner just cut the wires to splice into the aftermarket harness. Hopefully that's an option, otherwise I can start searching for that too.

This is more for the Firebird guys because there are very few/limited good options when it comes to permanently installing and AUX jack - or AUX Button - in a Camaro, but the Firebird dash has a few spots on the dash bezels that an AUX Button could be mounted.
There are 4 options (right now) went it comes to the AUX jack: Installed on the face-plate $75, installed on 1 of 2 different mounting buttons $75, or a jack on a cable is $60.
A face-plate mount is similar to this:
Here is a look at the 3 types of AUX jacks available at the end of a cable; The jack already on the cable is usually left to hang from the dash or center console and tucked away when not in use. I've been able to get a working AUX thru the 2 OEM buttons pictured. Both of these buttons are mountable in the 82-84 Firebird Dash Bezel. The button to the LEFT didn't fall into a factory cut mounting hole, but it will fit with very little trimming. ( 'Fits' better in my Trailblazer,... but it will fit in the Firebird bezel too. ) the button shown to the RIGHT fit right into a factory mounting hole. You'd need to cut a custom hole in the bezel, but both buttons will fit.
A quick check shows the larger button *should* fit in a 85-89 Dash bezel "blank". ( close trimming ! ) I have to check closer to see if a custom hole is possible due to mounting posts inside bezel. I'll update here once I get more time / some results from some additional trial fitting.
FOR CAMARO OWNERS READING THIS; I sat in a 91 Z28 cockpit for quite awhile recently trying to find a good place for mounting an AUX button, but could NOT come up with any good ideas. If it were MY regular Camaro console I'd probably want a permanent AUX mounted in the radio Bezel itself; probably not an AUX button, but an AUX jack installed thru a drilled hole. That seemed like the best possible place that something might "work". The idea of an AUX wire going from the rear defroster button area on the dash to the radio just did not appeal to me - but maybe that's just me ?? ( Inside the console OK ?? Better in the ashtray somehow ??) If any Camaro owners have an AUX Button mounting suggestion - CHIME IN !
PS. I've got a small collection of OEM AUX buttons,.... but the 2 shown are the only 2 that I can get to work properly and will possibly fit OK. (so far !)

OK- Had to re-write this: Bluetooth is Not Good; at least not good as requested. The problem is that the AUX itself acts as a switch. When the AUX cord is plugged into the jack it "switches" from the radio output to the Phone/MP3 player output. If the Bluetooth adapter is always plugged in you will not have any FM or cassette sound. For this reason, a rear mounted AUX isn't a valid option. A simple Jack on a cord that can be tucked behind the dash/console is a better option; you can always pull it down and remove the Bluetooth adapter if you want FM or cassette playback.
After shoveling and hauling ( 50-70 yards away ) then spreading 4 yards of dirt today - I'm quitting early tonight ! I'll check into things and will send you an update sometime tomorrow evening.
John, that makes sense. I was curious how you went about switching to auxiliary input, I thought maybe you rewired a designated button to now act as an aux switch, but that makes sense that the jack itself acts as the switch when there's a signal.
I'm really glad I mentioned my idea even though it obviously won't work. I'd rather find out now than later. I'll have to spend some time sitting in the car this weekend thinking of how I want to connect everything with that in mind.
I have read and skimmed through all of the 212 posts and didn't see something that I am thinking of. What are your thoughts on adding a USB Port instead of a Line In AUX? Obviously it can't be added to the face plate so on a line is what would happen. Anymore, IMHO, AUX Line In is another older tech like the 8-Track, Cassette & CD. Not saying it's bad, I'm just someone that now puts all of my music on a USB Drive and plug it into the radio that way. I really don't want to put in my Aftermarket Pioneer so I can use the USB function when I get my Z on the road, but I will if this is not an option you would consider doing.
I have no idea of the condition of my 85 UX1, (or pictures taken of it, for that matter) because I still don't have my car running or a proper battery for it. But, that is neither here nor there until I have your thoughts on a USB Port.
You know; I never seriously considered installing a USB in place of the AUX. New phones no longer have an AUX port and when I began using newer phone I thought about the USB connection for about 5 minutes. The first thought had was this:
The AUX jack acts as the switch,... if the USB was installed in place of the AUX a manual switch of some kind will be mandatory.
Finding a way to mount the AUX jack itself can be quite challenging - I don't care to deal with mounting a switch required to go from FM-to-AUX output as well as the requested USB; I'll just use an adapter if I need to. While I'm sure that you can create a custom USB direct connection to your Delco, it's not something I offer to folks. Using an adapter still allows the AUX jack to act as a switch & IMO,....... it's worth spending $4 on an adapter so I don't have to wire / mount / use a manual switch.

But when you have a phone like mine, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 (like you said), doesn't have an Aux port, then a USB port would be the one for me to have. But, it was just a question. I was just trying to keep the stock appearance. Guess I'll put in my Pioneer or spend over $250 for a Retrosound Stereo like this one:

You mentioned that you were "trying to keep the stock appearance",... if that's the case just have the AUX installed on a cable & buy yourself a $5 adapter. Why spend $250 for something you don't like ( or don't prefer) ??
Like I said: I'm sure what your asking for can be done, you've just got to decide where you want to mount your ON/OFF switch, where to mount the USB port, and then figure how to wire it. Just because it's not "for me" doesn't mean you can't built it custom the way you want it.
The Galaxy Note 10 actually all Samsung Galaxy S10s or Note 10s do not have an Aux port or headphone jack for that matter. Take that back, they do have a headphone jack, but it's the Type C charging/headphone port. So, a adapter wouldn't work. That adapter that you have shown in a male USB to Male AUX adapter. Which would make it to where you plug the USB into your PC and the other into a AUX port. If one wants to do a USB adapter, it needs to be a female USB to male AUX.
Besides, I'm not a guy that has steady hands to solder anything. Tried for years to do things like that, only to make matters worse. I leave it to people that can do what I can't. I know my limitations.
Here's a question. According to the RPO for my UX1 (1985 Z28) it's RADIO, AM/FM STEREO, CASSETTE, EQUALIZER, ETR, INCLUDES CLOCK. Now looking at my radio, it only has the Base & Treble up & down sliders next to the Volume & Tuning *****. Was my radio switched, or is that what they called those sliders?
I'm apt to think the one in the car is not original, but I have to check with you first. And now, after being away from this thread, I had finally understood what you were meaning. IDK why I had it in my head that I had to hook up my phone to the AUX jack. Guess I was so dead set that I wanted it to be a USB port. With the AUX jack, I could use the adapter to plug in a USB thumb drive, or, I could get a little MP3 player and plug it into the AUX jack with a cable. I understood this whole conversation about a day later at work. Of course I called myself a dumbass after I ran all of the posts through my head.

Yes; The original radio was switched at some point. The radio with BASS and TREBLE is a RPO code UM6 radio.
I use an older IPhone ( with AUX port ) for my music when I travel. If I am driving my truck I bring it; if I use my Berlinetta I bring it. The old phone is smaller than a cassette tape and holds an entire library of music on it,..... VERY convenient ! My current IPhone is a "PLUS" so it's bigger & has no AUX port, but I bought a couple cheap AUX adapters for it. I leave an adapter in each ride 'just in case' I ever forget to grab my older phone.
I understood this whole conversation about a day later at work.

Hey John, I am having an issue with my 1989 Pontiac turbo trans am radio not picking up any signal. Thought it was the antenna, but it was not. Someone swapped out the power antenna at some point and put a regular antenna, to which I swapped out and still no signal. Any thoughts? Also, do you have any gta radios for sale? Thanks

Im looking forward to my new radio for my car. But I may have to ask for something else as well. Do you fix up speakers OR happen to have a of OEM speakers for my car as well? My car’s sound system with the factory wiring was butchered to hell and back by the PO and it looks like I’m gonna have to start at ground zero to get some tunes playing in my car again.

I don't fix speakers & not sure what I might have for stock speakers. I might have a pair of fronts, but doubt I've got any good rears. Most people would agree that aftermarket speakers are the way-to-go if you've got to buy speakers. ( be mindful of the OHM rating for any speakers you use,.... factory used 10 OHM in front and 4 OHM in back. ) Probably a good idea to check each of the speaker locations to see if the original speaker plugs & wiring is still intact. At least then you will know if those connections need to be worked on before you start wiring anything or start looking for replacement speakers.
I have a 1985 AC Delco AM/FM stereo radio with two different power supply leads. One is light gauge part of the speaker connections, for the back light and power antenna connection, and one is a thicker gauge two wire plug with a metal clip, an orange and brown wire. I'm wondering if both power buses have to be energized for the unit to boot up? THX...Joe
Here is a schematic of a 'typical' Camaro radio: ( 1984 schematic )
The ORANGE wire is full-time power for the clock, memory, & other stuff (2-wire plug ), the YELLOW wire is switched power ( Black, 4-wire plug).
*assuming all other radio wiring is properly installed/intact:
If the YELLOW wire has no voltage ( blown RADIO fuse? ) then the radio will not respond in any way when the key is in RUN or ACC.
If the ORANGE wire has no voltage ( blown COURTESY fuse?) then the radio will 'turn on' when the key is in RUN or ACC. There will be no display, you will not have control over any function and all you will hear is static, but the radio will "turn on" so-to-speak.
I'm working from memory,.... but pretty sure that info is accurate.

Had John repair my UX1 radio for my firebird, it had a broken tape deck and such. He fixed it up great! He had it done and shipped in 2 days! When my radio finally came it looked better than when I sent it in and the aux cable is firmly attached and properly shielded. 10/10 would buy from him again!

Also have a few real nice CD changers and NAV touch-screens from 2002 - 2008 GM trucks. ( those require programming, custom plug-&-play AUX harness available for those too: MUST have factory installed XM radio )

Radio prices depend on a wide number variables; the type of the head unit ( UM6 or UX1, UT4, ), Cassette or CD, the cosmetic condition of that exact head unit, and also dependent on the work done to restore it. ( If the AMP board gets new caps the radio is priced higher than one running on factory caps. ) All the head units I sell are fully functional and I send a video of the radio while it's plugged in and working in advance of any purchase. Generally speaking prices from low-to-high ( for cassette radios )

Hey I just wanted to chime in. I had John repair the factory radio when I had my 1990 IROC-Z, and I had him install an aux port on a cable. It worked FLAWLESSLY. Also, I ran the aux cable under the front of the center console, and drilled a hole in the ashtray, and had the cable hidden in there. It worked awesome, and completely hidden with the flip of the lid.
