I was informed by GM Canada about my 1987 IROC-Z being under a recall, for the seat belt buttons, when the recall came out, IIRC, early 1990's!!
For my 1987 Z-28, which was bought private sale in November 2009, I took it to the dealer for a fuel pump replacement, and they ran the VIN# to see if any recalls came up, and the seat belt button one came up!! So they ordered the parts, and after a bit of a mechanic's "problem", I ended up fixing the buttons myself!!
THe parts are cheap, I found the sets of buttons and replacement parts for a few bucks... it was about the same price as shipping...
The tools are the thing that are impossible to get... ModernMuscle I think has some alternate tools for fixing the latches... I have not tried their tool yet, but I have it...

You really don't need any tools except a "small" screwdriver, as long as you are careful, you can accomplish this easy job with a little TLC, and a "small" screwdriver!!
I used a 1/8 inch wide flat tip, three inch long screwdriver. I put the blade into the button at the corners, and using the slightest upwards pressure, while using my index finger as a fulcrum, I popped the button off!!!
Three done in 15 minutes, the other one was a bit longer, as I had to go to the junk yard for a replacement button holder, that the "nice" Goodwrench part changer broke, using a "BIG" (foot long, 1/2 inch wide flat tip) screwdriver!!!
I even managed to remove the broken button holder with two "small" (1/8 inch wide flat tip, three inch long) screwdrivers!!!
I contacted Collin and unfortunately, I either hit a brick wall, or my IROC is one of the updated Camaro's. I gave Collin my vin number and he told me that there is absolutely nothing in the system for my Camaro. But, since my Camaro was initially purchased in the USA, the computer system in Canada is slightly different than the USA computer system. I can say Im rather happy though because my seat belts are in good shape. I really shouldnt be fussy. There is only a little fade in the red color, but not like other cars that have the buckle literaly flake away by rubbing it. Thanks for the help Dan.

If your car was included in the recall, which it should be (based on it's year), it shouldn't matter where it was originally purchased!! The computer system albeit is slightly different, it still should work, and give you a yes or no!! Say you were travelling through Canada, and encountered a warranty repair problem, I bet the computer would know about that!!!
If the recall was still outstanding against your car, I'm sure that you would be able to see it, when a dealer runs your VIN!!
My 1987 IROC-Z had the recall performed years ago, and the buttons show a little bit of fade after 18 to 20 years, it's bound to happen!!!
You could err on the safe side, and buy a set of replacement buttons, just in case!!!
I just going to invest in a whole new seat belt system. The upper side of my seatbelts are bad anyway. Driverside doesnt lock when I yank on it to see if it locks. Better safe than sorry huh.

GM?? still has replacement seat belts available, however, your colour choice is very limited (Gray), and you may not get a complete set!! The price is also through the roof!! Back in November, when I had my little mechanic problem, the dealer (Colin) got me a replacement seat belt for the driver's side (retractors, and belt), but the price was $514.00 CDN!! No thanks on that one, besides the colour was wrong!!
The "yanking trick" is hit and miss I do believe!!! Something to do with the angle?????
Well Collin confirmed that my camaro was indeed apart of the recall, and was still open for my vin. He looked into the parts, and like you said, said they were still available through the US. So I took that back to my dealer here, and they are gonna put the order through and see what happens. I guess I'll know sometime this week or next. Will keep you posted though. If they can't get it, I'll just order them through Collin and I'll pick them up next time I pass through Chilliwack.
On a different note, did you pay for your recall to be done? or did the dealer do it free of charge. There's been talk on here about it only being valid for 10 years then you have to pay for it to be done. However, us being in Canada, sometimes luck out? or visa-versa. lol.

I'm pretty sure this recall would be handled under the "old" GM, or Liquidation Motors. No doubt the dealers know that they will never be paid for any of this type work and creating good will with third gen Camaro owners is probably not a high priority with them. Heck, dealers I've dealt with in this area didn't care about goodwill with new vehicle owners, which is probably why they are out of business.
Well Collin confirmed that my camaro was indeed apart of the recall, and was still open for my vin. He looked into the parts, and like you said, said they were still available through the US. So I took that back to my dealer here, and they are gonna put the order through and see what happens. I guess I'll know sometime this week or next. Will keep you posted though. If they can't get it, I'll just order them through Collin and I'll pick them up next time I pass through Chilliwack.

It was going to be done free by the dealer, however, my recall was done free by me!! (see my first? post in this thread about my ordeal) It cost me $27.00 in junk yard parts to fix the mechanics handy work!!
I have seen JT the Administrator/Webmaster's post #304 in this thread with the recall letter, and in the recall letter it states "Your dealer will perform the necessary repairs anytime during the life of the vehicle, at no charge to you"!!
Why would they make you pay for their fault?????

Are you pretty handy at the mechanical things???? I do believe that there is a fix for seat belts that don't retract!!
Required disclaimer: All seat belt work that you do based on my "info" is strictly at your own risk, I in no way take any responsibility or liability for any injuries/death that may occur as a result of any modifications that you perform on any of your factory installed safety restaint systems, based on my "info".
Here goes: There is a mechanism that prevents the seat belt from tightening up against you, kind of like an old roll up blind. This is where the problem lies, providing that your return spring is not broken. You have to determine this via an inspection of your retractor. On one side, you have the clock spring for making the seat belt retract, on the other side you have the roll up blind gizmo. The roll up blind gizmo eventually stops working, due to weak spring, gummed up, jammed, etc. Once you pull the seat belt out as far as it will go, and this gizmo engages, it's stuck, you can not pull on the seat belt any more to make it release. The trick is to lift the wire on the end of this gizmo, out of the catch that it's jammed into!! Once you do this, and your retactor spring is not broken, it will wind up like it was a new belt!! I believe that this gizmo, can be eliminated altogether, and your seat belt will still function, as intended when required, as the inertia locking mechanism, is not connected to this part in any way whatsoever!!
The one function that you will lose, is the roll up blind effect, the seat belt will operate as a seat belt from the 1970's, where if you moved forward, the seat belt moved also, and when you moved backward the seat belt did also!! It will never stay slack, like it does sometimes now, where you would have to manually pull on it to make it retract!!
You can check all this out for yourself at the junk yard!! Examine a seat belt retactor from a 1970's car, it has the inertia lock, and the retractor spring, but not the roll up blind gizmo!! They worked then, and they work now!!
The other thing about the roll up blind gizmo is that I do believe that it also "limits" the speed of the belt moving forward, which causes/helps it to lock up also, giving it a two pronged attack on holding you back into the seat during a frontal collision!!
I have personally taken a jammed drivers side seat belt out of a 1986 Camaro, and popped the cover off of the roll up blind gizmo, and as soon as I released the wire out of the catch that it was jammed into, it retracted just like it was brand new!!! I replaced the wire back into it's slot, pulled the seat belt all the way out, and it promptly jammed again!! The second time, I removed the wire, the seat belt retracted again like it was brand new, and this time I left the wire out of it's slot, and everytime that I pulled on the seat belt it came out, and retracted like it was brand new!!
You can fix the retractors, even the roll up blind gizmo!! As long as the seat belt is in the retracted mode, it will stop you, as it's functional!! If the seat belt is jammed in the fully extended mode, you will stay in the seat, but your going to hit the steering wheel for sure, as nothing is holding you back!!
P.S. If you are driving your car with the seat belts in the fully extended mode, trying my "info" I believe, can't make it any worse for you!!!

That same thing happened to me with my 87 IROC but the guy said it was already done to my car too. But that doesnt make any sense because my passenger seatbelt wont tighten it just hangs loosely unless you yank on it then it goes tight.

Thats a different issue. This thread concentrates on the deterioration of the red release button. Your issue is related to the retractor. But I got the same problem. My driverside belt doesnt lock even if I yank the junk out of it.
i talked to pontiac earlier and they tried telling me my vin didn't fall between the break points. i had just woke up when they called and just said whatever and hung up. then after i woke up i went back to looking at the pdf and because my vin is hn22***6 it falls between the vin break points for year 1987 plant Norwood begining hn200001 up to and including hn253013. that little bit of information come from page 2 of 8 in the 1990 dealer product campaign bulletin. subject product safety campaign 90-c-03 seat belt buckles. date 06/90. models affected 84-90 pontiac firebird that document is on pages 9-15 of the 109 page pdf. i sent them an email similar to what i just wrote and they have not wrote back yet. anybodie got any suggestions what i should do about this. my seat belt buttons are a chalky pinkish white.and they don't always click or stay clicked.so i know they were never took care of.
Sucks but you may have to copy and paste the Memo Header, then copy and paste the most important info on a spreadsheet or word document and print (with the website noted if they dont believe you). Then head over to the Dealer and pound your proof on the service desk and say, "Isn't customer satisfaction your priority?" Then spill your story. Having a hard copy of such info can be very effective. Good luck bro.

Buy a kit, there pretty cheap too... One kit I saw came with the tool to remove the button...
My first post but I thought I'd inform everyone that I called my local Chevy dealership today and got a lady who looked up my VIN and acknowledged the recall and set me up an appointment.
This is in East TN and they are doing the push button and release mechanism free of charge. Even replacing with proper gray color.
Called the GM line, they said they either my car had already had it done or that didn't need it done. She went on to say that "I show no recall at all for any Camaro of those years". So i completely discredited what she said.
I then called my local Chevy dealership. When I told them what I was calling about they just informed me that most of the advisers had left for the day and for me to call back tomorrow to ensure they have the parts then i can set up an appointment.
So I guess my local dealership has dealt with several recalls on this cause she knew exactly what I was talking about.
my vin falls within the last 8 breakpoints, but 2 dealerships i called locally had no clue, one even said my vehicle is NOT effected, LL125992, am I in or out? on phone with chevy now and they cant find either. did the free seat belt wave crash?
I fell within the range and the GM dealer has no record of repair or such. Even the recalls that went out in the early 2000 didnt affect my IROC, and I still was one of those affected. But I said the heck with them.
I just wanted to update everyone on my progress. Two weeks ago after i called Chevy for the fourth time they led an investagation into the dealer. They told me to bring the car back so they can check for a compleation sticker. Surprise, they didn't find one. I then was told to call back two days later. After i got home that day i recived a phone call from Chevrolet. They told me it should go through and to contact the dealer, so they can take down some more info about the car so they can preform the work. The next day i called the dealer and i was told they didn't get the offical ok. They told me to expect a call in one or two days. By the third day i still didnt recive a phone call. I called them and was told that the head guy at GM who takes care of recalls still didn't approve it, and to expect a call in a few days. It has been a week and i am tired of the BS. I am going to Call Chevrolet today and let them know that if this isn't taken car of I am going to contact who ever it takes to get this done. I live in The NJ area and can contact the NY FOX station. They have a segment known as the problem solvers where they bring un wanted publicity to people such as the dealer i am dealing with. I in no way blam Chevrolet for this, this dealer is know to blow off old recalls. I have a friend who worked there and can testify to that fact.
They seem to only want to replace my drivers side harness, with flame red, they say that its all that is available. Wont touch any other belts. FYI complain about all belts coming undone and MAYBE they will change all...
Now I guess I will have to buy flame red belts for the rest of the car. At least my car is bright red, so the flame belts shouldn't clash too much

i got the big "Sorry nothing in our system" answer from my local Chevy dealership. My belts work, but the buttons are very faded and since my car is low mileage.. im worried they will fail as they are used more.

I have personally done the "fix" in my post #421, three times, and all three times I have met with success!!
I just did one last night in my garage, and it took all of about 15 mins to do the "fix"!!!
I took some step by step pictures also, hopefully, I'll be able to post them, this weekend!! (I have to figure out how to do this) Maybe it will be good enough for a sticky!!
Read my post, also the disclaimer, my seat belts work perfectly, they only lack the "comfort feature", and the "comfort feature" is for the weak people who can't handle the tension of the retractor spring!!

You don't need the removal tool to do the button replacement!!
I did mine with a small (1/8 inch) flat tip screw driver!!
15 mins to do all four!!!
A word of caution, go real easy on the plastic cover, don't use it as a pivot point, or you could end up with a broken cover!!
Use your hand/finger to protect the cover, and gently pry up on the old button at each end, you should see a little slot at each end, put the screw driver in there, and gently pry up!!
The button should pop off the black plastic button retainer!!
Re-assembly is straight forward, push the new button down gently on the black plastic button retainer, it should just "click" as you push down, make sure that you line it up straight!!

It looks like getting the correct color is going to be a problem though. He can still get rear seat ones in gray, but not front. He said he will get me a pair for the front, but can't promise what color. It's to bad that some places give people such a hard time. It took 5 min. He just gave the list of part numbers to the parts guy to find out what he can get and will call me on Monday. Depending what color he can get, I may have a new set to sell. Red in a gray interior will not work!

My IROC has several recalls but my dealer claims that I don't qualify. The latest recall was a light issue in 2003. I got my IROC in early 2002. They said I or somebody already claimed the recall. BS. And here you are with the free seat belt that some of us are denied, while trying to make a buck.

It is my son's car so I just want it to be safe. Take a second before you judge me man. I'm not out to gouge anyone her. Many people have helped me. I just want to get safe, working, correct color seat belts. If I have to sell the ones I get to do it, I will.
The advisor I work with is great. I have worked with him for years taking care of our fleet vehicles. Gateway Chevy (701) 282-5522. His name is Robin. Give him a call. Maybe you can at least get the proof you need that there is a recall on your car.

ur sons car? Well then. My apologies. Please excuse my previous post. Its just really frustrating when the Highway safty board says that we fall in the affected range but once we visit the dealer, they claim no such recall.

Talked to my service advisor today and my buckles are on order. I used a document posted on TGO that has all the recall info. Individual buckles are hard to come by, but the part numbers for the kits were available. They are discontinued from GM but they did a search and there are dealers all over the place that have them. I saw a dealer in AZ that had 3 sets of Gray. The kits have both front and rears. Keep after the dealers that say they can't get them. So far it has taken my dealer about 20 min to find everything I need, and they were grateful for the sheet that had the kit numbers on it.
