Custom Cluster Ideas.

Okay So I am picking up my 87 IROC LT1, 4L60E tonite!!! And it has a mechanical speedo with an elctronic tranny, plus he thinks the tach is off.

I was thinking of making a custom setup, but cant decide.

I like the Autometer Ultra Lite's since the speedo has a calabrator etc.
Now my biggest issue is what size to get. I am trying to keep this as cheap as possible.

Now I am stuck between a 5inch speedo and tach or a 3 3/8s speedo and tach.

The layout will be doen similar to stock.

Speedo, Fuel, Oil, Temp, Tach.

Could I fit that all in the stock loacation with 5inchers?

I am also gonna go with a A pillar setup for tranny temp, and volts maybe.

Anyways I am looking for some inspiration and possible some pictures of other peoples setups, maybe showing gauge size etc.

Thanks

Jay

Sweet...now i just have to deal with the prices. Im looking at around 350ish US plus shipping to Canada for the 5 inchers....and about 325 for the 3 3/8s.

Also I havent really hooked up oil, tranny etc before. I notice some say electric and some mechanical what would i need? I assume the mechanical phrase just means...running the hose's etc...and electrical is dome by computer or something?

Electrical means the guage has a sender that it reads from....
IE a mechanical fuel guage has a fuel hose ran to it.....not good having a fuel line under pressure ran to the inside of the cab. An electrical one will have a sender and from that wires are ran into the cab.

They both have their place.

Re: Custom Cluster Ideas.

It is an issue for fuel more than oil, hot oil isn't terribly dangerous but it is messy if it breaks. There are isolators for running mechanical fuel pressure gauges inside the cabin so you can go that route but for the cost of the isolator and the gauge you might as well just have the cleaner setup and have less fuel hose in the engine bay by using the electric gauge.

I've heard many a horror story involving oil line breakages. Everything from covering your date in hot oil to nearly causing an accident. You just have to be careful when you're routing that line. Probably the best setup is braided AN line to a bulkhead fitting on the firewall, then run to the gauge.
