two tone interior and center console delete
let me know what you think. i used the rustoleum fusion paint to paint the plastics from gray to black. i think it turned out pretty good. i had my mom make the patch over the center console from a naguhide(sp?) material till i get the cash up to get some new carpet with no center console hole, but i kinda like it like it is now!

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
I was gonna post over on your thread in the drag racing forum but i see this one now. I actually think that looks great Matt. I hate our big boxy plastic center consoles. I like how you did that. Also it looks like you moved the power window and hatch switches onto the dash? Hard to see with the light. Did you also make that little piece that hangs down off the dash to hold the gauges/switches?
Looks good though, i would suggest a new smaller grant steering wheel as a cheap replacement but im sure thats not a concern right now.
Oh ya...no e-brake? Or did you move that?

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
no ebrake. that's what park is for it didn't work before i took the handle out anyhow.
i've got two reason for not going to a smaller wheel
-i can't see the guages well with anything smaller than a 14" wheel
-the car has manual steering and is much harder to turn with the smaller wheels.
i also haven't found one i REALLY like in my price range.
i HATED my center console. i bought a console out of a 95 that was in really good shape, but it didn't flow with the firebird radio pod (the deal with my guages in it) i built the plates that the gauges/switches mount too, but the pod is a factory deal from a firebird. the window switches are now on the dash and are very easy to reach. i need to rip all this stuff out and put a 6pt in soon though. then it'll all go back in cause i love full interior race cars

Looks nice and well done.
Won't pass a vehicle safety inspection, but I guess if your not planning on ever selling it or your state laws don't require an inspection on age or sale, then it may be a moot point.

Not bad. I like the silver spoked Berlinetta wheel. How did that Fusion turn out up close?

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
I like the look. I think it gives the interior a smoother and less crowded look.
Have you tried putting any kind of a cover over the shifter to hide the mechanics?
I would not be inclined to eliminate the e-brake. I am sure a crafty person could rig up a new lever or extra pedal to actuate the e-brake.

at first when I seen center console delete in the title....I was like thats gonna look horrible, but then I seen it, and I like it.. everyday I fall more in love with your sport coupe

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
i am going to do something to cover up the base of the shifter, whether it's buying a pre-made cover or something else, but i gotta decide if i'm gonna keep this shifter, or go with a cheetah. i don't like this shifter at all in a 3spd application. a powerglide is a different story, and this shifter works very well with that.
glad folks are liking it. kinda give it an old skool feel when you drive it too

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
You did a real clean job, but im not feeling it.
I see what your trying to accomplish, but thats not the way to go. In my opinion, you either need a "bench" seat, which will NOT work in a third gen, OR, construct a less obstructive console.
Not sure if ur familiar with the early chevelle, or 70s buick consoles, but they kinda have a sharp sloped front end. Very flat, and space saving. a flat black console with an aluminum style trim to match ur steering wheel maybe? I think you get my drift.
Its a clean job, but u cant get rid of the tunnel, so it just doesnt work. Sorry.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
i decided last night, that if i were to do something different from this right now, i'd just put the camaro center console back in, but find one from 90-92 to match the dash a little better instead of the 82-89 i had in there. but i really like the way this is now.

It IS YOUR car in the end, and so is the decision. But like i said, you just cant get rid of the tranny tunnel, so it'll always look like something is "missing".

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
looks like a clean job to me! i also thought this would look like crap when i read the title but i'm really surprised by the clean and smooth look you accomplished there! gratz.. and btw, although i'm kinda a original freak but i still can't relate to online170's opinion.. imho there is nothing missing in terms of a console

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
well, i've got an 89 IROC that will stay original. it's VERY clean inside. for this car, it was originally a nothing-special-1990-rs-3.1-car. so i'm not really looking for a like new look for this car. i just want this thing to be as light as possible and as quick as possible, but to maintain a "street-car" appeal. i think i accomplished that.

ahh, i like it. my $300 92 rs beater is currently undergoing a dumpster makeover and is losing everything that doesn't make it functional or legal. i'm gonna make the console delete option look mild and also have a spray-on bedliner instead of carpet.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
idea: to cover up the shifter mechanics get a big rubber "hive" looking boot. well, not big, but big enough... you know.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
I'd say all he needs to do (if he chooses to) is to shape a piece of sheet metal around it to cover the base, then cover the sheet metal with the vinyl or whatever that he used for the center console area.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
hurst sells a pretty nice cover for this shifter. both from plastic and aluminum. i'm not keeping this shifter, i'm gonna go to a cheetah, but i'll still have to come up with something to cover the mechanism.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
Just out of curiosity, did you paint the panels in the trunk black too? If so, could you post up some pics? I got a '89 Firebird and for a while now was thinking of dyeing all my plastic black but leaving the seats and carpet grey. I just always wanted to know what the trunk would look like if the carpet was grey but the panles black.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
yes they are, i'll have to try to dig up some pics, cause i know i have them somewhere.
fyi, i would not do the paint thing to a daily driver. i "weekend warrior" drive this car and it's already starting to show some signs of wear. i'd like to come up with some black plastics eventually.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
you can buy a carpet without the holes cut out, so i wouldnt need your makeshift cover

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
you can make your check out to Matthew Walter, i'll need ~$350 for the front and rear, since a new carpet won't match 100% to my back carpet piece.
i realize this, i just didn't want to spend the money yet. i'm gonna pick up a different shifter, and probably a some new ASC Carpet all at the same time. i'm just not in a position to do that right now.

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
now how do i minitub my camaro and keep it full interior with a roll bar? I haven't decided on that cover yet, but when I pulled out my 3rd gen console I didn't have a spot to rest my arm, so in went a 4th gen console and now I can bring 4 cans of pop in my street car

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
i like it matt, but as far as shifters and covers...check this out. bet that shifter is lighter than the chetah, and this thing works good, even has a neutral safety switch built in and has a switch on the top button that can be used for a t brake or line lock, i thinkit weighs like 6 lbs or so, and about the same price as a chetah

haha, yeah i was kinda tired...actually, i'm still exhausted...gotta paper for my stupid english comp class on tuesday...i don't even wanna think about it.
----------
whose shifter is that? and where can i get it? i've only seen the one that's in your car. i like it.
looking at all the electronics in your car reminds me of all the re-wiring i need to do to get everything "properly" installed. i just picked up a new shiftlight yesterday as well.

thats the place, well as far as i know to get one. I made the console though, the top is one piece, left side isnt ment to come off, right side is removeable, and there you can get to the power and ground junction blocks that are in there, everything in the car runs off the factory fuse block , i just used wires for things i took out, like the nitrous is on the htr/ac fuse (not the main feed thats batt) most of the relays in front of the console have lights in them to see if it is on and if its triggered , goofy stuff, i know, but i can tell at a glance if something doesnt work, oh by the way the paint on that is rustoleum hammertone looks pretty cool, and you can touch up nicks with a sharpie lol

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
wow, those are actually pretty in-expensive. had i known that, i'd have bought that one first. oh well...live and learn. hopefully i can unload my quarter stick w/o too much money loss.
i've got a new fuse block that has 6 fuses in it that i'm gonna wire my fan and tbrake up to. it'll also give me a place for a water pump, fuel pump, and whatever else i decide to put in the car that will require 12v's.

Scour the junk yards, and look for a bench seat that is the right width. I bet a S10 bench is pretty close. Pull the material cover off, flip it over, and trim out the bottom of the center section, recover it, and you've got a custom built bench seat!

Re: two tone interior and center console delete
I’m curious, what don’t you like about your quarterstick?
WRT to getting rid of the console, my brother did something similar in his race car, but found a van/truck floor mat that was just long and rectangular, about the right color with rubber trim around the outside. Laid it over the tunnel, mounted a mustang, through the floor, floor mount shifter on top and it looks like the whole thing is factory.
